Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a relatively new breed of canine, originating in the United States in the early 2010s. The breed is a hybrid of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, usually involving crossing a female Husky with a male Pomeranian. This mix of two different types of purebred dogs results in a loving and adorable fluffball with a sweet personality. The physical traits most commonly associated with a Pomsky are a thick, fluffly coat of fur and the particular blue eyes you often see in a Siberian Husky.
Pomskies often have long, fluffy coats that are quite similar to that of a Pomeranian, but they come in a wide range of colors and they are a bit longer than a Pom's. They tend to have a dense undercoat, and their outer coat is usually quite soft and thick. Pomskies require frequent brushing on a regular basis to prevent the undercoat from matting, and to keep their coats in optimal condition. Depending on the individual dog, the amount of brushing needed can vary, so grooming schedules should be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Pomskies are considered designer dogs and their diet mainly consists of premium quality, commercial dry dog food, which can be found at most pet stores. You may also supplement your pup's diet with occasional treats, like dog biscuits, but should not do so regularly. It is important to make sure that the food you are providing is designed to meet the needs of a growing pup and contains all the essential nutrients. You can usually tell a good-quality food by noting the ingredients list, preferably containing whole sources of protein and carbohydrates and not mostly fillers.
Preparing for a new Pomsky means you will need to provide them with the appropriate environment, nutrition, and care they need to be successful and happy. Before bringing your Pomsky home, research and purchase the necessary food, toys, bedding, and an appropriate crate or kennel. You will also want to be sure to have the correct vaccinations and health tests completed by your vet. As Pomskies are active dogs, make sure you will have plenty of time to exercise and play with them every day.
Pomskies are a beautiful hybrid between the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. They range from small to medium in size and often fall somewhere around 15-22 pounds. As a result, Pomskies aren't typically classified as 'big dogs'. However, their size depends heavily on which parent breed's traits they inherit a Pomsky with Husky traits would be larger and look bigger than one with Pomeranian traits. Ultimately, the size of a Pomsky is highly variable, so it's difficult to categorize them as either 'big' or 'small' dogs.
Pomskies are generally quite active, so they should get at least an hour of exercise per day. As these dogs can be prone to weight gain, regular exercise will help keep them lean and healthy. Ideally, with a combination of strength and aerobic exercises. You could try going on long walks, running, agility courses, or playing fetch in the park. Swimming is also a great form of exercise for these dogs and can help provide lots of lasting, low-impact exercise. Additionally, you can add in regular game sessions and activities like tug-of-war and hide and seek.
Pomskies can generally get along with other pets when they are introduced in a controlled and safe environment. With proper socialization and training, Pomskies can learn how to coexist with other animals. It is important to supervise their interactions, and give them positive reinforcement when they interact well. Pomskies are usually very friendly and can learn to form bonds with other animals if given the opportunity. In order to foster good relationships, it is advised to introduce animals slowly and reward them with treats and positive attention when they display good behavior.
Pomskies have a reputation for being very intelligent dogs and are eager to please. They are quick learners and have a lot of energy that they channel into learning, making them highly capable of understanding instructions and commands given by their owners. They are also very social and love to be part of the family, so they often greet visitors warmly and with a friendly demeanor. Pomskies have the unique ability to remember their master's commands and routines, making them an excellent choice for families or individual owners.
