Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a hybrid, designer dog breed that is a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. This breed is quite new, and has only been around since the early 2000s. They grow to be approximately 11-15 inches tall and usually weigh between 15-30 pounds. Pomskies are usually characterized by a thick double-coat and bright, almond-shaped eyes. Personality-wise, they generally have a pleasing, outgoing temperament, although they can be strong-willed and stubborn at times.
A Pomsky coat is unique, with the combination of a Siberian Husky and Pomeranian canine creating a designer hybrid breed. The coat texture varies, drawing breeds from both parents. Generally, the coat is thick and fluffy, will require frequent brushing to maintain its’ lustrous appearance. Pomskies tend to have a double-coat with an outer coat made of thick guard hairs, and an underlayer of insulating soft downy fur. Colorings range from varying shades of brown, black, red, white, cream and gray.
It is important to feed your Pomsky the right balance of nutrition for their age and activity level. Depending on their age, the best protein sources for an adult Pomsky would be different than for a puppy. Protein sources that are appropriate for an adult Pomsky include high quality proteins like chicken, turkey, and white fish. For an adult Pomsky, the ratio of protein to carbohydrates should be approximately 25 to 75 percent. Puppies require a slightly higher or "puppy specific" ratio of protein and carbohydrates, and this should be adjusted as your puppy matures into adulthood.
Before getting a Pomsky, there are a few essential items you will need to have, including high-quality food designed specifically for puppies, food and water bowls, puppy toys, a collar and leash, a muzzle, a bed and blankets, grooming supplies such as a brush and nail clippers, and a puppy crate or kennel for the pup to relax in.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large. Toy Pomskies, often referred to as Pomskies Minis, weigh 6-12 pounds, while Standards range anywhere from 15-25 pounds. A more rare size is the Medium Pomsky which generally weighs between 13-20 pounds. Unusually large Pomskies have been known to weigh up to 25 pounds, sometimes more depending on the breeding size of the parent dogs. Ultimately, Pomskies come in sizes that are suitable for a wide variety of family dynamics.
Pomskies are active, intelligent dogs that require a moderate amount of exercise. To maintain their health and wellbeing, an owner should aim for approximately 45 minutes of exercise daily. This exercise doesn't necessarily have to be walked, an owner can split it into two different activities of their choosing such as 20 minutes of walking and 25 minutes of playtime. Exercise for Pomskies should remain within their comfort levels, as too much can be detrimental to their health, most noticeably their achilles tendon.
Pomskies can get along very well with children, as long as they receive appropriate socialization and training. They are incredibly friendly, intelligent, and loyal animals, and love to be around family members, especially children. Pomskies are known to form strong bonds with their owners, often becoming irreplaceable members of the family. They can make great playmates, taking walks and playing fetch together. As long as a Pomsky puppy is handled and taught proper manners from a young age, they can become the perfect family pet.
Training your Pomsky is an important part of being a responsible pet parent. Training can help your pup learn commands like “sit” and “stay”, and teach them good habits. The best way to train your Pomsky is through positive reinforcement. Reward them when they do something correctly, and use a calm voice or treats to make them feel loved when they fail. To begin, start with simple commands like “sit” and “stay”. Repetition and consistency are key.
