Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid-dog breed that is a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Although the breed is still fairly new, it has rapidly become a popular pet. Generally, Pomskies have a small and compact stature like the Pomeranian, but have slightly longer fur and floppy ears like Huskies. They often inherit the blue eyes of the Husky or the dark-brown eyes of the Pomeranian. Pomskies can range in size from around 10 to 30 pounds and approximately 12 to 15 inches tall.
Pomskies have beautiful, dense coats that come in a variety of lengths and colors. Most commonly, their fur is thick and fluffy with some hair growth around their eyes that follows the shape of a raccoon. They typically have colors ranging from sable to cream to silver grey. Some have even been spotted with a rare blue hue. Their fluffy coats require frequent brushing and regular trimming to prevent any mats or tangles. Their fur also has an undercoat layer that helps regulate their temperature and provides extra protection from the elements.
Pomskies should not be fed table scraps, as this can cause nutritional imbalances and potentially lead to obesity. Additionally, some human foods such as garlic, onions, and chocolate can be toxic to dogs and should not be given to Pomskies. As Pomskies are very small dogs, they should also not be fed large bones or bones that splinter easily as these can become lodged in their throat and lead to choking hazards. Furthermore, Pomskies should not be fed raw meats or unpasteurized milk as these can contain bacteria that may cause illness.
Before getting a Pomsky, some essential items you should purchase are a sturdy collar with an ID tag, a short leash that is adjustable, dog-safe shampoo and conditioner, a comfy bed that meets your pup's size and activity levels, chew toys that provide mental stimulation, food and water bowls, treats and a selection of healthy kibble, a brush for grooming, a crate to foster obedience training and potty-training skills, poop bags, and anything else specialized for Pomsky care! You may also want to invest in obedience classes to ensure the best outcomes for your pup.
Pomskies range in size, depending on their parent breeds. The American Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky have different size standards, so the size of the Pomsky can vary anywhere from 6-14 inches tall and 10-30 pounds in weight. However, it is important to note that most Pomskies tend to stay in the small end of the size range in order to keep their adorable, toy-like appearance.
Pomskies are a relatively active breed and need around an hour or two of exercise each day. Physically, this can include long walks and/or jogs, or activities like fetch. Additionally, a mental workout should be included in the form of obedience training, teaching of new tricks, and puzzles or games. Pomskies are also sociable dogs, so social activities like doggy-daycare or trips to the local dog park can have added value. With proper exercise, Pomskies stay healthier, including avoiding obesity, and become more well-rounded members of the family.
Generally speaking, Pomskies are highly social and get along very well with children. They typically exude lots of energy to play and interact with small children in a loving and protective manner. Pomskies love the attention and care that children can provide as they are very companionable creatures. Of course, get-togethers with young children should still be carefully monitored as young Pomskies like to explore shiny objects, chew on anything they can find, and can get overwhelmed easily.
Pomskies are often considered smart dogs due to their small size and eagerness to learn. As a hybrid breed, the intelligence of the Pomsky can be affected by the particular background of each individual dog. Generally speaking, they can be easy to train as any combination of Pomeranian and Siberian Husky parent-breed characteristics are likely to factor in, with an average Pomsky being energetic, alert and eager to learn. As with any other breed, treating your pet right and offering it positive reinforcement when it learns something new are the best options for unlocking the Pomskies' intelligence.
