Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, designer mix of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. They are known to be an intelligent, loyal and friendly class of dog, but can also be independent, headstrong, and require firm management and training. Pomskies can be very active and are known as escape artists, so could benefit from an active lifestyle and lot of exercise. They tend to have a thick double coat and good weather tolerance, but can suffer from a number of health conditions that could result from the mixing of the two breeds.
Pomskies generally have a low to moderate shedding tendency, so while they won't leave your floors covered in pet hair, they may still leave plenty for you to pick up. That being said, regular brushing and bathing can help to keep the shedding amount to a minimum. Additionally, their coat may vary as they are a cross between the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian, making their fur type a combination of both dogs. On a whole, you can expect Pomskies to be very low to moderately shedding compared to other breeds.
Pomskies should typically not be given human food, like chocolate, salty snacks, and processed baked goods as they are too high in calories and unhealthy fats. Some of the foods that could cause health issues in Pomskies are grapes/raisins, onions, garlic, and certain types of nuts, as these foods can cause digestive upset, or worse, become poisoning. Additionally, Pomskies should be supervised around bones, as they could splinter and potentially injure your Pomsky's throat or intestines.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky means investing in the right supplies and ensuring you give your pup plenty of love and attention. It's important to find the right food that is suited to your pup’s age and activity level, as well as getting the necessary toys and treats. Providing your Pomsky with the appropriate level of exercise and stimulation is also essential for their physical and mental wellbeing. Additionally, proper grooming and regular veterinary visits should be established and adhered to in order to keep your pup healthy and happy.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes ranging from miniature to large. Their approximate height at the shoulder can range from around 10 inches for a toy-sized Pomsky to around 17 inches for a large one. Additionally, they normally weigh between 8 and 33 lbs. A miniature Pomsky is often just the right size for apartment living or for those who want a smaller, low shedding breed. Larger Pomskies may be more suited for home owners who want a larger, more active pup.
The amount of walking your Pomsky should have each day will depend on its age, health, and fitness level. Generally, an adult Pomsky should have at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, and two shorter walks (each between 15 and 20 minutes) broken up throughout the day are usually better than a single longer walk. Puppies tend to need even more exercise, so it's important to consult with your veterinarian about the appropriate amount of time for your Pomsky.
Pomskies can make wonderful family pets! They are small yet active and intelligent, making them easy to train. They are very loyal and affectionate, and they form strong bonds with their owners. With an owner willing to give them the care and attention they need, a Pomsky can be an excellent addition to any home. Their size makes them great for apartments and smaller homes, while their energy means they are still happy to join in on family outings and outdoor activities. With the right attention and training, they can also be skilled watchdogs.
Training a Pomsky can be both easy and difficult, depending on the individual and the amount of time dedicated to teaching them. Generally, Pomsky puppies are just as eager to learn as any other breed of dog. However, they may require a bit more patience and consistency due to their size and occasional stubbornness. If you are prepared to invest the necessary effort, you can successfully train a Pomsky. Make sure to use positive reinforcement such as providing ample praise and treats, as well as avoiding scolding or punishing them for making mistakes.
