Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer breed created by the intentional breeding of a purebred Pomeranian and a purebred Siberian Husky. This unique hybrid combination of the two breeds, when bred correctly, brings together the wonderful alertness, intelligence, and trainability of the Husky along with the lively, people-oriented personality of the Pomeranian. Pomskies tend to have thick, fluffy coats of varied colors including black, white, grey, and sable. They usually stand between 8-15" tall and weigh anywhere from 8-30 pounds depending on the parents' sizes.
Pomskies are not considered to be hypoallergenic. It is possible that they may be hypoallergenic, due to their hybrid nature, but that cannot be determined without doing an allergy test. If you have a family member or pet with allergies, it may be a good idea to have them tested before bringing a Pomsky into the family. All the same, Pomskies have very low levels of allergens and are known for being a lot less friendly hosts of allergens than other breeds of dogs.
Pomskies should not be fed table scraps, sugary snacks, large pieces of raw meat or bones, onions, grapes, or chocolate. As a general rule, stick to high-quality, age-specific dog food that is specially designed for small breeds like Pomskies. Avoid giving table foods, as many of these can cause obesity, diabetes, and pancreatitis, all of which can have dire consequences for the health and well-being of your Pomsky. Make sure you also avoid giving your Pomsky food that has gone bad, or food with added artificial flavors and colors.
Start by doing your research, familiarizing yourself with the breed and any specific needs a Pomsky may have. Create a budget for necessary items such as a crate, bed, toys, and food. Visit your local pet store or do your online shopping in advance and have everything ready before your new Pomsky arrives. It's important to schedule a visit with your veterinarian for proper vaccinations and checkups. Set up a safe and stimulating area in your home where your pup will feel comfortable. Provide plenty of chew toys to keep them entertained and help with teething.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed created by breeding a Siberian Husky with a Pomeranian. However, depending on who the breeders are and the exact ratios in the bloodlines used, you may find Pomskies larger or smaller than the average mixed breed. Generally, Pomskies are considered to be small dogs and range in size from 7 to 20lbs, with some on the higher end being as large as 35lbs.
Pomskies tend to be high-energy dogs that need daily exercise and regular activity to stay healthy and remain physically fit. Generally speaking, they need approximately 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise or active playtime per day in order to stay in peak condition. It is highly recommended to take your Pomsky for regular walks, hikes, or playtime with other dogs to ensure they are getting enough exercise. Additionally, providing your Pomsky with plenty of opportunities for mental stimulation and physical challenges will satisfy their need for activity.
Pomskies have qualities that make them excellent family dogs. They are loyal, affectionate, and intelligent, making them excellent companions for all members of the family. They also have low shedding coats and require minimal shed cleaning, making them suitable for busy households with hectic schedules. Pomskies are generally active, happy, and easy to train, giving them well-rounded personalities that adapt to all types of living situations. They are especially good with children and will often try to join in on fun activities. In addition, Pomskies have relatively low-maintenance requirements for feeding and grooming.
Training a Pomsky is easy but also important! Start by familiarizing your Pomsky with the basics. Train them to sit, stay, and come when called. This will build their trust and help them to understand and obey basic commands. Additionally, socialization is key, so it's important to gradually expose your pet to new people, places, and smells. Positive reinforcement is the best form of training; use treats, affection, and verbal praise to reward your pup. Also, be sure to create an environment that encourages the desired behavior.
