Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer hybrid breed of dogs acquired by crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian husky. Because of their unique lineage, they are a very special and attractive pet that will bring a lot of joy and enthusiasm into your home. Pomskies are incredibly intelligent and energetic with a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. They need daily exercise and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and prevent destructive behavior. Pomskies tend to be loyal and affectionate with their families and could even excel in various canine sports like agility and obedience.
The Pomsky coat is unique and may come in many colors including black, white, brown, red, grey, speckled and multi-colored variations. The texture of their coats is usually very soft and fluffy similar to that of an Arctic fox. The Pomsky’s coat is quite weather-resistant since they typically have a double layer of fur – an inner layer for insulation and an outer layer that is a harsher texture to create a waterproof barrier. The length of their coat can range from short to long, but most often is medium in length.
Pomskies are usually fed a high-quality, commercially-prepared diet that should be appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Generally speaking, required nutrients for this breed are the same as for any other breed. A healthy diet for a Pomsky should include proteins from meat, a good source of fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. A diet primarily consisting of lean proteins, vegetables, and carbohydrates such as whole grain pasta or brown rice is good, while sugary treats should be kept to a minimum.
Preparation is key for owning a Pomsky! First, pick up necessary supplies including a sturdy dog bed, dishes for food and water, a collar and leash, potty pads, a set of basic grooming supplies, chew toys, and food and treats specifically formulated for puppies. Secondly, come up with a routine for feeding and walking the pup. It's important that puppies of any breed have a regular schedule to adhere to so that they can learn the basics quickly.
Pomskies can be considered small dogs, depending on their generation and the type of parent breeds that are used in their ancestry. Generally, Pomskies are considered to be a small to medium-sized breed that can range anywhere from 8 to 30 pounds. They also tend to stand between 12 and 15 inches tall at the shoulder. As designer dogs, Pomskies are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized by a few independent registries. While these dogs tend to be small in stature with a short and silky coat, their personalities are certainly larger than life!
The amount of time that you should walk your Pomsky per day depends on the individual dog’s needs, age, and activity level. Generally speaking, a Pomsky should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, with an ideal amount being closer to an hour. Twenty minutes of that should include walking, running, or other physical activity. To make sure your Pomsky is getting the best exercise and has a healthy life, try not to keep them inactive for too long. Short walks multiple times a day and interactive playtime are great ways to keep your pup healthy.
Pomskies can be wonderful companions for families that have children. They are a social breed, so they typically get along very well with people, especially children. They are intelligent and need lots of mental stimulation, which makes them perfect for families that want an active and interactive pet. Pomskies can be very loyal and loving pets and usually thrive with a lot of attention. In order to have a good relationship with a Pomsky, it’s important to start training and socialization from a young age.
Training a Pomsky can be easy depending on the amount of time and effort that you put into it. If you’re willing to work with your Pomsky consistently and reward them for good behavior, you can teach them basic commands and potty training. When training a Pomsky, it is important to remain patient and not get frustrated. Positive reinforcement is key, for it will help build a strong bond between you and your pup. It is also important to remain consistent with the same cues or commands each and every time, as well as providing them with lots of praise.
