Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. They are a relatively new breed of dog, having first been developed in the early 2000s. Pomskies typically have the fluffy coat of a Pomeranian and the distinctly marked facial features of a Husky. They are relatively small dogs, typically weighing between 10-30 pounds and reaching heights between 10 and 15 inches. Pomskies are energetic, intelligent, and loyal companions that thrive with training and social interaction.
Pomskies are known for their beautiful and unique coats. Depending on the parent breeds, their coats can vary. Generally, Pomskies have thick, soft double coats with a mixture of colors from both of their parent breeds. If they inherit the Husky gene, they will have a longer, thicker fur coat; while if they inherit the Pomeranian gene, they will have a shorter, thicker fur coat. Both will usually have bushy tails like a Husky and may have a mix of spotted/striped patterns and a range of colors.
Pomskies are lively, active dogs who require a nutritious, high-protein, low-fat diet to stay healthy. The best kind of dog food for Pomskies is one that contains natural, wholesome ingredients, lots of quality proteins like chicken, turkey, and eggs, and other healthy fats like fish and olive oil. Omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon oil, are especially important for Pomskies, as they promote healthy skin and coat and help the nervous system properly develop.
Before acquiring a Pomsky, it is important to purchase some essential items to ensure they have a happy and healthy life in your home. This includes purchasing toys, a bed, water and food bowls, food, grooming supplies, a collar and leash, cleaning supplies, and a carrier. Furthermore, Pomskies are rather active and need sufficient exercise, so acquiring items such as a tie-out lead, a running harness, and toys such as balls and chew toys would be beneficial as well.
Pomskies are classified by most standards as a small to medium-sized breed. Due to their hybrid nature, Pomskies can take on characteristics from either parent breed, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, resulting in a wide range of sizes all within the "small" designation. Generally, a Pomsky's height can range from 8-15 inches and weight can range from 10-30 pounds. Although some Pomskies may be larger than this, most are considered small dogs.
Pomskies are known to be active, highly energetic, and even mischievous dogs. They require regular exercise to burn off some of that energy, and without it, they can become destructive, bark often, and even develop negative behaviors. However, with proper training, exercise, and plenty of mental and physical stimulation, Pomskies can make excellent companion animals and loving family pets. Pomskies are generally quite intelligent and they love the attention they receive from their owners which often comes with playing and performing activities with them.
Pomskies can be great with kids and make excellent companions for a family. They are active dogs, so they need an owner who will provide them with plenty of physical and mental exercise. It's important that they get lots of socialization with people, both adults and children, so they know how to act when they encounter them. With proper training and socialization, Pomskies can be excellent with children and form incredibly strong bonds of friendship. They can be a fuzzy, loyal friend and keep kids entertained for hours playing in the yard.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Pomsky each day will depend on multiple factors, such as your pup's age, level of obedience, and energy level. Generally speaking, a younger Pomsky should receive about 15 minutes of training a day, whereas an older Pomsky may be able to train for up to 30 minutes. At any rate, the goal is to give your pup quality training rather than try to compress all the time into one session. If your Pomsky is particularly active, you may even need to break it up into two or three short sessions spread throughout the day.
