Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a relatively new designer dog breed, created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. The results of this hybrid breed vary, both in size and temperament, but they generally retain the fluffy, warm coat of the Husky. Pomskies are gentle, intelligent dogs that make great family companions due to their loving, outgoing personalities. They are generally very quiet and can be easily trained to do many tricks and behavior modification tasks.
Pomskies are not hypoallergenic. This hybrid breed is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, and due to their genetic makeup they can carry potential allergens. Although the Pomsky is considered a “hypoallergenic” mix, at this time there is no 100% guarantee that they are completely allergy free. Symptoms of allergies include itchy skin, coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing, all of which could be caused by an allergic reaction to a Pomsky.
Pomskies do not have any dietary requirements that are markedly different from other breeds. However, due to their small size, it's important to ensure that they get enough nutrients to maintain their energy levels. It's also important to avoid foods that could potentially be choking hazards. Quality snacks and food specially formulated for small breeds, along with complimentary food with the right balance of protein, carbs, and fats are the best option for Pomskies. It's important to only feed your Pomsky the recommended amounts depending on their age and activity level.
To ensure your Pomsky is comfortable in its new home, it is important to adequately prepare your home for its arrival. First, make sure your yard is securely enclosed. Pomskies are energetic dogs who need plenty of physical and mental exercise; they should be able to romp and explore a large, safely fenced-in area. Additionally, make sure that any potentially hazardous household items, from household chemicals to small objects, are safely stored away from your pet's reach. Setup a comfortable area in your home with dog beds, chew toys, and any other items your Pomsky may need.
Pomskies typically weigh between 10-30 pounds at full-grown maturity, with most of them ranging at the lower end of that spectrum. As they're a mixed breed, the size of any individual dog can vary, but they usually stay on the smaller side. These compact canines tend to measure around 14-15 inches tall from the shoulder, though some can be as small as 10-12 inches or as tall as 16-18 inches. As their stature suggests, Pomskies are sometimes referred to as "pocket pups" due to their miniature size.
Pomskies require a moderate to high level of exercise and physical activity. It is important to provide them with an adequate amount of exercise daily. Whether it is a game of fetch, swim or walks in the park, the exercise provided depends on the age and level of physical fitness. Generally, puppies require more physical exercise than adult Pomskies. Puppies should engage in a variety of activities that offer a variety of physical activity. Walks should be around 15-20 minutes long.
Pomskies can make excellent family dogs when they have been well-trained, socialized, and exercised regularly. Given the right environment and plenty of attention, they are incredibly loyal, sociable, and intelligent, making them great additions to any family. Unlike some other breeds of dog, they are usually very gentle and patient with children, making them great companion pets. Additionally, they are quite easy to exercise, since they are small, energetic dogs, so an active family can provide them with a lot of playtime and mental stimulation.
The amount of time needed each day to properly train a Pomsky varies. Generally speaking, at least 15 to 20 minutes per day for basic training is necessary. As your pup masters the basics, you should gradually increase the length of time spent training each day. For owners seeking to train their Pomsky to become a show dog, significantly more time will be needed each day possibly up to two hours a day. It is also important to bear in mind that Pomskies need plenty of physical exercise as well as mental stimulation. This should also factor into your daily training routine.
