Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a cross breed of a purebred Siberian Husky and a purebred Pomeranian resulting in the Pomskies being a hybrid, designer, or mix-breed class of dog. They possess the physical traits from both parent breeds, characterized by a fluffy double-coat in a multitude of colors and a small, stocky body with a signature Husky face and pointed ears atop the head.
Pomskies have a coat that is a hybrid combination of its parent's coats. The coat of a Pomsky is typically thick, soft, and often double-coated. Common coat colors include browns, greys, creams, whites, and blacks, with patterns such as sable, black and tan, and brindle. The length and texture of its fur will vary, depending on how much of its Pomeranian versus its Siberian Husky DNA it has.
Pomskies should avoid ingredients that may be harmful to their bodies, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and garlic. Additionally, avoid giving them fatty or sugary snacks such as candy, cake, and soda. Feeding Pomskies table scraps and leftovers should be avoided as these foods can contain ingredients that are not suitable for their diet, and can be difficult for them to digest. It's also important to give food that is specifically tailored to your dog’s stage in life, as puppies may require food rich in vitamins and minerals.
Becoming the best possible puppy parent for your Pomsky starts with educating yourself. Research their breed characteristics and breed-specific health concerns. Since Pomskies are relatively new hybrid dogs, it can be especially helpful to consult with a veterinarian experienced in caring for them. Additionally, establish a routine for your puppy including potty training, feeding times, grooming, and regular exercise. Ensure you provide them with socialization to become properly socialized. Provide your pup with plenty of entertainment in the form of positive-reinforcement obedience training and interactive toys.
Pomskies, also known as Pomeranian-Huskies, can range in size from 8 to 15 inches in height and 8 to 25 pounds in weight. The size of the breed ultimately depends on the parentage. Generally, male Pomskies are larger than females and can reach 25 pounds or more. The size of the Pomsky's parents must be taken into consideration as well, as a first generation Pomsky may not reflect the typical size of the breed. Additionally, the Pomsky's diet and environment can also have an effect on its size as the dog gets older.
Absolutely! But, it's important to remember that Pomskies are small dogs and have a short stride, meaning they tire easily. Therefore, you should always take precaution to not overexert your pup and pay attention to any signs that they may need a break. Think of your dog's size and age when considering a running route and the amount of time you will be out. Put in mind that running at a very early age and in excess can be harmful for their developing joints. Starting slowly with short distances is recommended.
Pomskies can be an excellent family pet as they often form a close bond with their owners, which can extend to other members of the family, particularly children. With the right training and socialization, Pomskies can be gentle, loving and playful around children. Because of their alert and intelligent nature, Pomskies are incredibly attentive parents and will protect their family members from any perceived danger. Additionally, Pomskies have a good energy level, yet are small in size making them a safe companion for kids.
The amount of minutes per day you need to spend training your Pomskies depends on their age, activity level and skill level. Generally speaking, puppies need more training than older dogs as they learn new things quickly and need to be taught how to behave. You should aim to fit in at least 30 minutes of training per day for your Pomskies and as they get older you can gradually increase the amount. If your Pomskies are particularly active then longer sessions may be beneficial, but make sure you always break it up into multiple shorter sessions throughout the day.
