Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a fairly new breed, having only been introduced in the late 2000s. They are a designer breed, a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. They typically stand between 12-15 inches tall and weigh between 10-30 pounds, making them ideal for apartment living. A fun fact about Pomskies is that they have two coats of fur, making them adaptable to colder climates in the winter. As a result, they require a regular grooming schedule to keep their coats clean and shiny.
It is not certain if Pomskies will cause allergies. The best way to know is to determine if either of its parents, or the breed as a whole, are known to trigger allergies. As a mix of the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, Pomskies are not considered a hypoallergenic breed, though each of its parents could have qualities that make it easy for some people to be around.
Pomskies are hybrid dogs, a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. As a result, their diet needs can vary based on the ratio of genes they inherit from each parent. Generally, these dogs need high-quality, nutritionally balanced dog food. Premium dry kibble is recommended, as it helps keep their teeth and gums clean. The suggested daily amount of food for a Pomsky should be 2-3/4 to 3 cups, split into two meals.
Successfully preparing for your new Pomsky can be exciting and quite overwhelming depending on your level of experienced pet ownership. Start by puppy-proofing the house and backyard. Any hazardous objects such as electrical cords should be removed, and secure and safe boundaries should be established. Assemble all necessary items such as food and water bowls, comfortable beds and blankets, a few chew toys and any other items that were recommended by the breeder. Ensure the house is set to a comfortable temperature and, if necessary, purchase room humidifiers or dehumidifiers to create an ideal climate.
Pomskies generally range from 6 to 14 pounds and are considered to be a small to medium sized dog. Although the breed can vary in size, they do have specific features that identify them as a Pomsky. The most notable features are their thick luxurious coats, small stature, and foxlike face. Generally the ears are erect with a short muzzle, their size is considered compact, their tail tapers to a plume and they have a strong resemblance to their parent breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky.
Pomskies are energetic and lively breeds that need plenty of regular exercise. Like all dogs, they need to be walked multiple times a day, ideally for 30-60 minutes at a time. Additionally, they benefit from activities such as running with their owners or playing fetch with their favorite toys. If possible, let your Pomsky get out in a fenced yard and run around to expend some energy. If you do not have access to a fenced yard, regular trips to a dog park or other outdoor area are a great way to provide your pup with the physical exercise they need.
Pomskies are known for their loving disposition and eagerness to please, making them well-suited for first-time owners. They are easy to train and relatively healthy, requiring only basic grooming and medical care, like any other breed. However, it is important to remember that all dogs have individual personalities. It is important to research the breed before bringing one home to ensure that you understand its needs and behavior, as well as the potential challenges that come with it. With proper research and dedication, Pomskies can make a great companion for first-time owners and bring years of joy.
Training a Pomsky can be challenging but rewarding. While it may take some extra effort from both owners and furry family members to get the desired results, it's rarely impossible. Most Pomskies are highly intelligent and take kindly to positive reinforcement, making it relatively easy to teach them basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Additionally, because they are so eager to please their owners, many Pomskies even learn more advanced commands like 'bark' and 'rollover' in no time.
