Questions & Answers
Pomskies are truly unique and interesting dogs. Developed by selectively crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, they are now recognized as a hybrid or designer breed. Pomskies are extremely energetic, affectionate, and intelligent traits inherited from their two parent breeds. They have an interesting combination of the intelligence, affability, and alertness of a Husky and the loyalty, playfulness, and trainability of a Pomeranian. In addition, their beautiful thick fur coat makes them a favorite among dog enthusiasts.
Pomskies can be both shedding and non-shedding, depending on the individual. Generally speaking, most Pomskies are low-shedding, meaning they have a very low dander level and require minimal brushing to keep their coats healthy. Non-shedding varieties, which produce very little to no dander, are also available. The key is to research and purchase from reputable breeders, as it's important to understand the genetic make-up of the pup you choose.
Pomskies should not be fed anything other than their recommended diet. Human food should not be given as it may contain ingredients or additives that can be harmful and cause illness. Foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, garlic, and onions should be avoided as they can be toxic to Pomskies. Certain raw meats, dairy products, and eggs, can contain bacteria that can make them sick. Other foods that are high in fat, sugar, or salt should also not be given.
Contrary to popular belief, Pomskies do have some special requirements. Just like all breeds, they need a certain amount of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and well-rounded. Therefore, owners must be prepared to dedicate a significant amount of time for daily walks, playtime, and other forms of mental enrichment. Pomskies have very high energy levels, so a good amount of exercise and enrichment is necessary to keep them from becoming bored and destructive. They are also very social animals and need regular human interaction, regular grooming to keep their coat properly maintained, and a nutritious diet.
Pomskies can appear in a variety of sizes, depending on the exact genetics of a particular pup. Generally, Pomskies are considered to be in the small-dog category; however, some pups might have larger Pomeranian or Siberian Husky parentage which could increase their overall size. Generally, a full grown Pomsky is going to be 12-15 inches tall and weigh between 15-30 lbs.
Pomskies are often enthusiastic swimmers! Whether taking a dip in the pool, playing in a lake, or enjoying a beach day, they seem to thoroughly enjoy the water. Some have even been known to jump into the pool on their own accord! Generally speaking, Pomskies can be taught to take to the water with some basic training and positive reinforcement. That said, it's important to remember to never leave them unattended while swimming as it can be a very dangerous activity for any dog breed.
Pomskies are often good family dogs depending on their upbringing and level of socialization. They tend to be loyal and can generally be quite loving with their family. However, it's important to note that they are also highly active, very playful, and quite intelligent. All of these things can make them a great fit for a family who is willing to provide them with plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. It's also helpful to have an experienced handler when training them given their active nature. With proper direction and training, Pomskies can make great family companions.
Pomskies are loyal and intelligent dogs who thrive when they are properly trained and socialized. The best way to train a Pomsky is to begin with positive reinforcement. Start with basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Offer your dog rewards for following commands so it learns what behaviors are rewarded and what behaviors it should avoid. Socializing is also very important. Socializing your Pomsky will help them be less fearful and more confident in different social situations. Exposure to different people, animals, and environments should begin as early as possible.
