Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer breed of dog created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. This breed is relatively new, and while they have been popular for a few years, they still appear to be catching on. They are often described as having the high energy, alertness, and intelligence of a Husky with the cuter, more compact size of a Pomeranian. Generally, they are smaller than a Husky but bigger than a Pomeranian.
Pomskies are not a purebred breed, so it's difficult to determine if they are hypoallergenic or not. It’s important to note that the extent to which they trigger allergies is dependent on the individual dog and their genetics. Generally, they have a low-dander coat due to their combination of breed characteristics (Pomeranian and Siberian Husky), though there is some variation in coat types amongst Pomskies.
Pomskies are hybrid breeds and their dietary requirements can vary depending on their genetic mix and activity level. Generally speaking, it is recommended to feed them a good-quality, well-balanced, high-protein dog food, preferably from one-source, such as a certain breed or age group. The quantity should be determined according to their age, size, activity level and any special dietary needs they may have. It is recommended to store food in an airtight container and divide meals into two or three smaller meals per day.
Before welcoming your new Pomsky into your home, it's important to prepare yourself and your family members for the responsibility of owning a pet. Make sure that everyone is on board and will dedicate their time, energy, and resources to taking care of the dog. Research the breed and their specific needs so you can provide an environment in which they can thrive. Establish a budget for food, toys, vet visits, and training, and set aside an area for their bed, food and water dishes, and toys.
Pomskies usually get to be between 10 and 15 inches tall and can weigh anywhere between 10 and 30 pounds when fully grown. An adult Pomsky is typically about the size of an Amercian Eskimo Dog, but may vary depending on which characteristics they inherit from either of their parent breeds. For example, Siberan huskies have a larger stature with a higher rate of growth overall, while Pomeranians are smaller in size and have a slower rate of growth. Regardless, an adult Pomsky is considered to be a medium-sized dog with a thick coat and a short muzzle.
Generally speaking, it is recommended that owners walk their Pomsky for at least 20 minutes per day. This should be broken up into two 10-minute walks in the morning and afternoon. That way your pup can get some exercise, as well as some sensory stimulation from going outside. It's also important to give your pup some extra time to run and play in an enclosed yard or off-leash area. This should be at least 30 minutes extra per day, provided there are no safety issues.
Pomskies can be good family dogs if they receive the proper training, socialization, and mental stimulation. They are usually outgoing, affectionate, and intelligent, often possessing the herding instinct of their Husky heritage. Pomskies require consistent and firm training in order to become well-rounded and obedient. Additionally, they thrive on daily exercise and may not be the best breed for sedentary households. Their double-coat also requires regular grooming to prevent tangles and matting, and they may need to be taken to the groomer more frequently.
Training your Pomsky is very important and an enjoyable experience for both of you! Start by establishing a regular routine of exercises and rewards for good behaviour. Be consistent and patient with your pup and begin teaching him/her commands with rewards such as treats or praise. Regularly reinforce the positive behaviour with toys or a treat. Keep training sessions positive and short, and never punish your pup for mistakes or wrong behaviour. Slowly build on the commands and exercises to challenge your pup's mind, which will not only improve their physical ability but also the bond between the two of you.
