Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a cross-breed derived from two distinct canines -the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. These two breeds are from different lineages, the Pomeranian belonging to the Spitz family and the Siberian Husky an Alaskan sled dog descendant. While the term Pomsky is not officially recognized, this line of designer dogs has recently become increasingly popular. Pomskies tend to be small in size, usually no more than 30 pounds, and possess a mix of characteristics from both parent breeds.
Pomskies, like all other animals, can potentially cause some people to have allergies. However, it is impossible to give a blanket statement either way, since everyone's body and reaction to animals vary so widely. Some individuals may have no reaction to one animal breed but may become uncomfortable in the presence of another. Additionally, the level of dander and shedding can vary from animal to animal and is a common cause of allergies. To be sure, it is advised that potential owners spend time with the breed, or at least a similar breed, ahead of making a commitment.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed and require a specific nutrition plan to remain healthy and happy. Typically, they are fed a diet that includes a premium dry dog kibble, supplemented with nutrient-rich sources of protein in the form of wet foods, such as canned or freeze-dried. Since Pomskies are an active breed, they should be given regular meals that contain enough calories and fat to support their activity level. Healthy treats such as cooked fresh foods, fresh vegetables, and fruits can be added to the daily diet too.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky is an achievable goal! Start by educating yourself on the breed, so you know exactly what to expect from them. Also, ensure you are able to give them plenty of time and attention, as this breed needs a high level of human contact and interaction. Make sure you are well-stocked with the supplies they need, such as a crate, collar, nutritious food, toys, and plenty of chew treats. Additionally, provide them with proper puppy training and socialization to establish consistency and promote good behaviors from an early age.
Pomskies are not necessarily considered small dogs, as they are usually medium-sized. They are a cross breed of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, and vary in size depending on which parent they take after more. While it is common for Pomskies to be of a reasonably small size, some can grow as tall as 18 inches and weigh up to 40 pounds, making them a medium-sized breed. Generally speaking, the size of a Pomsky can range anywhere between 10 and 40 pounds.
Absolutely! Taking your Pomsky for regular runs is an excellent way to keep them healthy and active. Make sure you're up for the challenge, as they are incredibly energetic dogs and need plenty of exercise. Before you begin running, remember that your Pomsky should always have proper identification with them in the event they're separated from you. That way, you can ensure they get back home again safely. Additionally, bring plenty of water for them to drink, as their short snout can cause them to tire more quickly.
Pomskies typically have a very sweet, affectionate and gentle personality, making them great companions for kids. They bond well with children and love spending time with them. Pomskies usually have game-like personalities, which means they can help build a child's confidence and help them stay active. They are often patient and gentle when interacting with children, so they make an excellent family pet. Furthermore, Pomskies are known for their intelligence, allowing them to be easily trained to understand and obey basic commands.
Training a Pomsky can vary depending on the individual pup. Generally speaking, because Pomskies are intelligent dogs that respond well to positive reinforcement techniques, they tend to be relatively easy to train. For those looking to start basic obedience training, getting your pup to respond to commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it are usually the first few steps in the process. Taking your Pomsky to doggy classes is also beneficial to ensure proper socialization and help with training.
