Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a relatively new hybrid breed, created by crossing husky and pomeranian parents. They are small to medium-sized dogs, with a maximum weight of around 30 pounds and a height of 15–17 inches at the shoulder. They possess a thick double coat, usually white and one striking color, and almond-shaped eyes in shades of blue or brown. They are loyal, intelligent, and playful; however, they require regular exercise and attention. Pomskies are known for being relatively healthy, but they are prone to certain genetic disorders such as hypothyroidism.
Pomskies are not specifically bred to be hypoallergenic, though some individual dogs may be. There is no guarantee that these hybrid dogs will be hypoallergenic, but some of the parent breeds, like Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies, are known to be hypoallergenic, or less likely to spark reactions in people prone to allergies. In addition, crossbreeding can sometimes enhance the desirable traits of the parent breeds, so it is possible that some Pomskies may also have this trait.
Pomskies are sensitive to certain types of food, so it's important to be familiar with what should and should not be in your pup's diet. Generally, Pomskies should not be fed raw or fatty meats, as these can cause stomach upset. Additionally, foods containing preservatives, artificial colors and flavors should be avoided to prevent potential health problems. Pomskies should also stay away from caffeine, alcohol, grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, and macadamia nuts, as these can all be toxic.
Preparing for a new Pomsky is an exciting process! Before bringing them home, it's important to create a safe space for them to feel comfortable and secure. Begin by gathering the basics such as a large kennel, collar, and leash, and a variety of toys that will keep them entertained. It is also a good idea to be prepared for any accidents that may occur by having a carpet cleaner on hand. Lastly, familiarize yourself with their dietary needs and make sure you have the proper food and treats in the pantry before their arrival.
Pomskies vary widely in size, so it depends on the individual dog. Generally, these designer hybrids tend to be of a medium-sized breed that ranges from 12 to 30 pounds. Coats vary too and may be long or short. When bred from small Pomeranians with small Siberian Huskies and both parent breeds have double coats, then the Pomsky will usually be on the smaller side. No matter the size, Pomskies are considered companion dogs that love to be around people, so they may require a bit more attention than the average small breed pup.
Pomskies have a natural curiosity and potential to swim, although their level of interest may vary from one to another. Some Pomskies may love spending time in the water while others may approach it cautiously. Typically, Pomskies are small dogs that have moderate exercise needs, so it's important to introduce your Pomsky to swimming in a safe and enjoyable way. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for your Pomsky and will help keep them fit and healthy.
Pomskies are known to be very affectionate and loyal dogs, making them great family dogs. They are generally social, intelligent and energetic, and have a lot of love to offer. Pomskies are usually adaptive to most environments, and do well in homes with children and other pets. They require daily exercise, both physical and mental stimulation, as well as plenty of positive reinforcement. Pomskies generally respond well to training and can be great companions. With consistent training and attention, they can make wonderful additions to your family.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training a Pomsky each day really depends on the dog and the individual needs that your pup might have. It's a good idea to set aside at least 15 minutes per day for basic commands and 20 minutes for more advanced tasks. Additionally, Pomskies are very active dogs. This means that you should plan to take your pup for a walk or two each day (at least 20-30 minutes each) to ensure that they're getting the exercise they need. Finally, be sure to set aside time to play and socialize with your Pomsky.
