Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog, a combination of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Pomskies are considered to have the sweet and playful personality of a Pomeranian, with the active energy of the Husky. Although the size of the dog varies, most Pomskies tend to be small to medium in size, usually weighing between 15 and 30 pounds, and standing between 10 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder. Due to the bloodline, Pomskies can also inherit a variety of colors from their parents.
Pomskies are a hybrid or designer breed, bred from an Alaskan Husky and a Pomeranian. Generally, their coat traits closely resemble that of the Pomeranian, so they are not considered to be a non-shedding breed. However, Pomskies do have the benefit of having a shorter coat than the traditional Husky, so they tend to shed less; just as some Pomeranians have a thicker coat and shed more than other Pomeranians.
Pomskies are sensitive to certain types of food, so it is essential to be mindful of what you are feeding them. In general, you should not feed your Pomsky table scraps, rawhide, bones, or high-fat treats like bacon and pork. Additionally, some fruits, such as grapes and raisins, as well as chocolate, are not suitable for consumption by Pomskies. They should also stay away from nuts, onions, and garlic, as they can be toxic. Furthermore, sweeteners such as xylitol can be especially dangerous to these dogs.
Before getting your Pomsky, it is important to prepare yourself and your home. Begin by gathering all the essential items such as food and dishes, a collar and leash, a crate or bed, toys, treats and grooming supplies. Additionally, it is important to dedicate some time to potty training and teaching basic obedience commands. If possible, schedule a meeting with a qualified dog trainer to ensure you are taking the right steps. You may also want to consider talking to your veterinarian to make sure your new pet is in good health.
Pomskies, also known as the Pomeranian Husky mix, are considered mid-sized dogs. They seldom grow larger than 15-25 pounds, so they are certainly not as large as full grown huskies or large breed pomeranians. However, Pomskies have stocky, muscular bodies which make them appear larger than they actually are. It is important to note that Pomskies are bred to be companions and even though they have a friendly demeanor, they can surprise a first time owner with their energy and love of adventure.
Pomskies enjoy swimming and typically take to it very well. They do need to be taught safety around water, however. Because it is a relatively high-energy activity, you'll want to ensure they've had plenty of time to build up stamina before taking them in the water. It is also important to keep an eye on your Pomsky while they're swimming so you can ensure they're safe and that they're getting proper exercise without getting too tired. Doing water activities with them is also a great way to give them the physical activity and mental stimulation they need while also having fun.
Pomskies can usually be very good with kids, especially if they are trained and socialized properly. They are known to be affectionate and loyal, with an enthusiasm for play that can make them an ideal companion for energetic children. They have a loving, gentle nature and typically bond with their human family members, especially if they have been introduced to them at an early age. With patient and consistent training, Pomskies can become excellent canine family members, learning and responding to commands and routines quite well.
Pomskies are indeed considered to be a relatively intelligent breed of dog. They are highly trainable and, with consistent socialization, can be taught a range of commands. Generally they are aware of their environment and develop quick problem-solving skills. They are often referred to as being "clever and loyal" companions. Pomskies are also often referred to as “velcro-dogs” since they tend to stick very closely to one person. They are known to possess strong memories and have the ability to remember commands even after a long period of time.
