Questions & Answers
Pomskies, sometimes referred to as Pomeranian-Huskies, are a hybrid breed created by crossing a Siberian Husky with a Pomeranian. Recognized as a designer breed by the American Canine Hybrid Club, Pomskies are usually a smallto medium-sized dog with an average weight of 15-30 pounds when fully grown. This hybrid breed is known for their loyal personalities and intelligent behavior, making them great companions for families with children.
Pomskies are not considered hypoallergenic as both breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, typically do not hold the non-shedding gene required for that trait. Despite being a mix of both these breeds, Pomskies will not be non-allergenic as they usually retain the usual traits Their parents provide. However, Pomskies tend to have less shedding then the Siberian Husky, and Pomskies usually require less grooming than their parent breeds.
A Pomsky, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, should have an appropriate diet that is tailored to his specific needs. High quality dog food, specifically formulated for medium-size breeds, can provide the necessary nutrients and vitamins for a healthy diet. Also, it's important to find the correct balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Supplements can also be beneficial, and adding some wet food or raw fish every now and then can be an excellent source of added nutrients.
Before getting a Pomsky, you should stock up on essential supplies such as food and water dishes, a comfortable bed and bedding, chew and interactive toys, nail clippers, a brush and comb, a collar and leash, training treats, waste bags, flea and tick treatments, and a quality puppy food appropriate for your Pomsky's age. You'll also want to make sure you have the supplies you need to potty train your dog such as puppy pads or a kennel and regular pee breaks.
Pomskies are generally considered to be small dogs due to their hybridization between a Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. As the result of this hybridization, the average size of a fully-grown Pomsky typically ranges between 10 and 15 inches; they usually weigh between 15 and 25 pounds. Although the size of a Pomsky may differ based on the physical features of their two parent breeds, it's clear that Pomskies are generally considered small dogs.
The amount of daily exercise your Pomsky needs will depend on her age, size, and health. Generally speaking, an adult Pomsky should get at least 30 minutes of walking per day. However, if she is young and/or still growing, or out of shape, then it may be best to increase that amount to 45-60 minutes of walking daily. As always, make sure to talk to your veterinarian to get the specific advice tailored to your Pomsky's individual needs. Exercise also helps your Pomsky release built-up energy, maintain a healthy weight, and stay mentally stimulated.
Pomskies can be an ideal choice for first-time owners. They are known to be smart, loyal, and make for great companions. They require a good amount of socialization, exercise, and training in order for them to reach their full potential. Because they have a moderate energy level, they are not considered overly needy or sensitive. They are also fairly easy to groom as they have a low shedding, double-coat so regular brushing sessions will be all that's needed. They bond well with owners and love to be part of the family activities.
Training your Pomsky requires patient and consistent practice. Ideally, you will start training your pup as soon as possible in order to avoid any bad habits from developing. Remember to make it a positive experience by rewarding good behavior or progress. Some basic commands such as asking them to sit or stay can help them learn proper discipline. Schedule regular training sessions that are fun and engaging, while also providing structure to your Pomsky. Use treats as a reward to reinforce good actions. Always provide them with lots of love and encouragement when your pup is doing a good job.
