Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian husky, so they inherited the best of traits from both. These energetic little bundles of joy have an average life span of 10-16 years, are very loyal to their owners, and have an affinity for cold climates.
Pomskies are not considered a hypoallergenic breed. They are a hybrid, or designer breed, consisting of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, and hybrid breeds are not generally considered to be hypoallergenic. Pomskies also typically have a softer coat than their Pomeranian and Husky parents, but you should still consider their potential to trigger allergies when considering a Pomsky pet. Allergens can be present in dander, saliva, and fur, and all of these can be found in Pomskies.
Generally speaking, Pomskies have similar dietary needs to most other dog breeds. However, it is important to provide them with a well-balanced diet that is nutritionally complete and that carefully considers their energy and activity levels. As Pomskies can have a higher metabolism than other breeds, frequent feeding periods should be incorporated into their meal routine, such as three small portions a day rather than one large one. Regular weigh-ins and adequate access to fresh drinking water is also recommended.
Before preparing your home for your new Pomsky, make sure to check your local laws on pet ownership, such as leash laws, pet insurance, and vaccination requirements. Start by dog-proofing your home by securing or cleaning away potential hazards such as electrical wires, poisonous plants, and potentially harmful household items. It's important to also create a space specifically for them, such as a corner with crate training supplies, a comfortable dog bed, toys, and area rugs.
The size of your Pomsky puppy depends on a number of factors, including the size of the parents, their ancestry, and diet. Generally the size of a Pomsky puppy is a mix between that of its parents, usually somewhere in the small to medium size range. The average size of a full-grown Pomsky is between 10 and 18 pounds. However, since of these dogs are a hybrid breed the exact size will be unknown until the puppy is full-grown. In addition, the size of the puppies will vary even within the same litter, with some being larger and some being smaller.
Pomskies are an active breed of dog that need plenty of stimulation. They enjoy games, exercise, and physical activities, such as fetch, agility training, and hikes. Although their activity level depends on the individual Pomsky, they generally love to play and explore, and they won't be happy if they don’t get enough physical and mental stimulation. Pomskies also need plenty of companionship and love to cuddle and be around their owners. They also demonstrate great feats of intelligence which reveals itself best when introduced to various activities, like agility training or obedience.
Pomskies get along very well with kids as they are a breed with great temperaments. Generally speaking, they have a sweet disposition and a friendly character, making them great canine family members. They are intelligent, active, and loyal, so they bond quickly with their handlers, including children. As with all dog breeds, socializing your Pomsky pup early and often is key to ensuring a great relationship with the kids. With proper training, they are eager to please and enjoy being around people.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Pomsky will depend on various factors, such as your dog's age and its existing obedience. Generally, a half-hour session per day should be enough. This should be tailored to your pet, though, so consider shorter, more frequent training periods that add up to 30 minutes per day. Additionally, use treats and rewards during your training sessions, though you should not overdo it; be consistent and maintain the same level of commands across sessions.
