Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog, created by crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are active, intelligent, and have a friendly, affectionate nature. They can range in size from 5-30 lbs, and can come in many different color combinations. The average life expectancy for a Pomsky is 12-15 years, and they need daily exercise and mental stimulation in order to stay strong and healthy. Grooming needs vary by individual, as some have longer coats requiring more frequent brushing.
Pomskies are often thought to be hypoallergenic due to their mixed heritage of the Pomeranian and Husky, since both breeds generally have low-shed coats. However, it is important to note that crossbred "designer" dogs, like the Pomskies, are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Due to this, they are still technically considered to be hybrids, so their genetic makeup cannot be considered fully predictable. Furthermore, the shed cycles of a "designer" pup can be harder to determine.
Your Pomsky should be fed a diet of premium, balanced dog food appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Additionally, as these are hybrid dogs, make sure the food you choose provides enough of their ancestor's preferred food -like raw, unprocessed meats -to ensure optimal nutrition. Raw meat should make up only 10-15% of total nutrition. You should avoid any dog food that has been made from anything other than whole-food sources, or any labeled as 'natural' or 'organic'. Treats should obviously also be given in moderation, and organic as possible.
Before you welcome your new Pomsky pup into its forever home, it's important to prepare your house for their arrival. Start by child-proofing your home and reducing potential hazards. Make sure each room is puppy-safe, removing or securing anything fragile, edible, or dangerous. Pomskies are very intelligent and will explore their surroundings, so it's best to make sure they can't get into trouble. Also be sure to create a dedicated space for your pup, such as a dog bed or kennel, and use that area for all meals and snacks.
Pomskies are a designer dog breed that's a result of a Pomeranian and Siberian Husky mix, so their size can vary significantly. On average, they typically range from 8-15 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 10-30 lbs when fully grown, making them ideal for a family pet. They are known to be more active than other dogs, so they need plenty of exercise and play time. They can sometimes become dominant, so early socialization and training are essential to teach them obedience and help them become a well-rounded pup.
Pomskies are an energetic, fun-loving breed, so they generally really enjoy swimming. They are intelligent and agile, so swimming is a great way to challenge them mentally and physically. Pomskies can usually be seen in a lake, pool, or other body of water near you, as they find swimming incredibly rewarding and exciting. Since they're typically excellent swimmers, they're great companions to take along with you fun day activities that revolve around being in the water. Most Pomskies will happily take a dip in a lake or pool with no hesitation.
Pomskies can be excellent family dogs given the right environment and training. They are intelligent, friendly, spunky, and loyal pups that enjoy being around people and other animals. Pomskies are good with children, but because of their size and energy, they need to be supervised around smaller kids and taught how to play properly. They are a fairly active breed, so they need regular physical and mental exercise to stay healthy and happy.
It is recommended that Pomskies receive at least 20 minutes of training per day to help maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle. Even though 20 minutes is a minimum, each Pomsky and their individual needs should be considered when deciding how much time to devote to daily training. The best way to ensure your Pomsky is getting the proper amount is to observe their energy levels and behavior. If a Pomsky is experiencing too much energy or showing signs of restlessness or excessive barking, they may need more training on a regular basis.
