Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a relatively new and still rare designer breed. It is a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Pomskies are small to medium in size, with a lively personality. They have a medium energy level and usually enjoy physical activity and being outdoors. This hybrid breed is friendly, social, intelligent, and loyal. They are good with children and other animals. Pomskies usually have thick double coats which require regular grooming, and regular exercise for them to stay healthy.
Pomskies are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, making them a hybrid breed. They have characteristics that can be attributed to both parent breeds, with some variance. Generally, Pomskies can be considered a low shedding breed. While they are not completely non-shedding, the amount of fur they tend to shed is much less than other dog breeds. They do require brushing and grooming to maintain their coat in optimal condition, but the amount of fur they shed is minimal. When looking for a low shedding breed, the Pomsky is an excellent choice.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, so they have different nutritional needs. It is very important to not feed a Pomsky human foods that are high in sodium, sugar, or unhealthy fats. Additionally, foods like onion and garlic can be toxic to Pomskies and should be avoided. Furthermore, never give a Pomsky raw meat, as the risk of bacterial infection is much higher for them than other breeds. Dairy can also be difficult for a Pomsky to digest and can cause gas.
To prepare your home for your new Pomsky, start by making sure the living environment is safe for your pup. Check for any sharp edges, exposed wires, and other hazardous items that your pup might chew on or otherwise harm itself with. Additionally, provide a comfortable place for your pup to rest, such as a carrier or crate. Make sure there are items to chew on and play with, such as soft toys, a rope or chew bone, safe block or stacking toy, and things to explore.
Pomskies come in a variety of different sizes, depending on the type and lineage of the parents. Female Pomskis tend to be smaller than male ones and range from anywhere between 7 to 15 inches in height at the shoulder. Generally, an adult Pomsky will weigh between 15 to 30 pounds, but it may be slightly higher or lower depending on how big its parents were. Ultimately, Pomskies are an impressive mix of breeds with beautiful features that make them one-of-a-kind when it comes to size!
Pomskies are high-energy dogs who need quite a bit of exercise each day. The amount of exercise they require will vary depending on their age and health, but the general guideline for most healthy Pomskies is about 1-2 hours of activity each day. This could include long walks, hikes, jogs, swimming, or playing in an open area. For puppies, playing sessions should be shorter and more frequent. If you're unsure of how much exercise your Pomsky needs, ask your vet or breeder for guidance.
Pomskies can make great pets for first-time owners. They are smart, loyal, and have relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming and exercise needs. While they may be more active than some traditional lap dog breeds, with proper training and plenty of mental stimulation they can adjust to a fairly low energy lifestyle. Because these dogs are part-Pomeranian, they may be more likely to bond well with one partner, making them a great addition to a family where only one person will be primarily caring for them.
Training a Pomsky is not a simple task, though it can be accomplished with patience and consistency. Because Pomskies are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Husky, they can have some of the same traits of both. Pomeranians may be willful and stubborn, while Huskies are intelligent, active, and escape-prone. So, training your Pomsky means you'll need to be diligent in establishing yourself as the alpha, and carve out specific time for training sessions that reward correct behaviors.
