Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog that have been rising in popularity in recent years! Pomskies are a mix between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, resulting in a lovable and loyal companion. They are highly intelligent and very strong-willed, making training and obedience classes a must. Despite their small size, they have the stamina of a Husky and love to run, making them an ideal companion for those who lead a active lifestyle. They usually have one blue and one brown eye, giving them the nickname "angel eyes".
The Pomsky coat is typically thick and moderately soft. It can range from an undercoat of fleece and the outer coat, which tends to be a bit courser, depending on the type of Pomsky. Generally, there is not one solid coat color since these dogs have either a Siberian Husky or Pomeranian parent. Most commonly known coat colors are white, black, gray, brown, and red, but these dogs can come in any combination of these colors.
Pomskies, also known as Pomeranian-Husky hybrids, are typically easy to feed as they thrive on a variety of food options. The best recommendation is to offer a premium, high-quality dry dog food that is specifically formulated for a small to medium-sized breed. Supplements such as fish oil, probiotics, and natural supplements can also help to ensure optimal health. Additionally, treat recipes that offer a nutritional boost such as freeze-dried jerky, fresh fruits, and vegetables are great for providing added nutrition.
First and foremost, you need to make sure you are well-equipped with the necessary supplies in order to care for your new Pomsky. You should have all the essential gear like food, water, bowls, bedding, a collar, leash, toys, treats, and some good dog shampoo for baths. Additionally, you should research and decide on an appropriate vet to ensure your Pomsky is healthy and is up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations. You will also want to think about training and socialization; enrolling in group classes can be beneficial for both you and your Pomsky.
Pomskies are typically small to medium-sized dogs, although there can be variance from individual to individual. Generally, the larger the Pomsky, the closer to mid-size they get; depending on breeding, some Pomskies grow to be larger than most small breeds. They typically weigh between 15 and 30 pounds, although the size can vary greatly from one specimen to the next, as the breed is still fairly new and the size is determined by the size of their parents.
Pomskies generally require quite a bit of exercise in order to stay healthy and entertained. Depending on your individual dog's energy level, they could need anywhere from 30 60 minutes of exercise a day. This could include anything from a long walk, to a game of fetch or fetch in the water, to running off some energy in the backyard. For younger Pomskies, shorter, more frequent exercise sessions work better than one long session. Keeping your Pomsky active with regular exercise will not only benefit physically, but the enrichment activities will also help with bonding and let them mentally explore.
Pomskies are generally very friendly and have the potential to coexist with other pets. It's important to introduce pets properly and gradually, while closely monitoring their behavior throughout the process. It's best to start by having your Pomsky and other pet in the same room, but separated by a barrier. This way, they can still interact but in a more controlled manner. Once they are comfortable with each other, you can attempt to bring them together in a calm and safe environment, such as a fenced-in yard.
Training your Pomsky should start as soon as you bring them home. Dedicate some time each day to give them the proper attention and structure they need. To ensure your Pomsky is properly trained, create a consistent routine and stick with it. Reward their good behavior with praise or treats. Repetition is key to helping them learn and understand. If there are any behaviors you don't want, stay consistent with your expectations and immediately let them know when they step out of line. Utilize tools such as leash and collar dragging, "training collar," sit and stay commands, and crate training.
