Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, or designer, breed of dog. As a result, their exact parentage can vary. Generally, Pomskies are the result of crossing a purebred Pomeranian with a purebred Siberian Husky. As a result, they are typically classified as part of the Spitz family of breeds, given the Husky's origin in Eskimo cultures. Pomskies are considered to be a small to mid-sized breed, generally ranging from 10-30 pounds and standing up to a foot in height depending on gender.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed between a Pomeranian and Siberian Husky and vary in size, appearance, and personality. While the breed itself does not typically cause allergic reactions, individuals with certain allergies might react differently. Nevertheless, before purchasing a Pomsky, it is important to do some research and take into consideration allergies that may be present. The best way to do this is to introduce yourself to the environment and/or the animal to test your reaction or see if any symptoms are triggered. It may also be a good idea to consult with a vet to discuss your concerns about allergies.
Pomskies do not necessarily have any special dietary needs, but it is important to provide them with a nutritionally balanced and species-appropriate diet. This means providing them with fresh, high-quality, low-grain or grain-free kibble that is formulated for their size and activity level. It's also important to monitor your pet's body condition and adjust food intake accordingly they should have a visible waist and rib check. Additional protein and fats will also assist in keeping their coat and skin in the best condition.
When getting a Pomsky, there are some items you need to consider purchasing before bringing your pet home. Getting a cage or kennel, bed, food bowls, collars, leashes, chew toys, and food are some of the essentials. Depending on how active your Pomsky is, you may also want to purchase an exercise pen and balls to play with. Along with these items, make sure to have a first aid kit for your pet in case of an emergency. Vaccines, flea collar, brushing tools, grooming supplies, and general pet care must also be on hand.
Pomskies can vary in size, but even though they may not be considered "big dogs" by breed standards, this mixed breed can range from 10 pounds to upwards of 40. On average, they stand around 12 to 15 inches in height. Some Pomskies may remain on the smaller side, while others can be closer to Yorkie-Pom size. Generally speaking, they are classified as small to medium-sized dogs, and may be a good fit for those looking for a smaller breed.
Depending on the age and energy of your Pomsky, daily walks are recommended for at least 10-15 minutes. For puppies and younger dogs, shorter walks are recommended since frequent activities can help the learning process. However, as your Pomsky gets older, longer walks can help promote healthy energy levels and can provide environmental enrichment, such as exploring new sights, sounds, and smells. Additionally, regular walks can help strengthen the bond between you and your pup.
Pomskies make excellent family dogs given their social nature and loyal personalities. They have the friendly disposition of their parents', the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, so they are eager to please and enjoy spending time with their human family members. Because of their small size, Pomskies are great for apartments or small living spaces, and due to their intelligence, are very trainable. Pomskies are adaptable and quite versatile which makes them the perfect family pets.
The amount of time you will need to commit every day to train a Pomsky will depend on your particular pup and his/her needs. Generally speaking, you should plan to spend at least 30 minutes a day on activities that nourish the bond between you and your dog. This time should include activities that teach basic obedience commands and practice proper socialization skills to ensure your furry friend is both happy and well-adjusted. Additionally, it is important to include physical exercise tailored for the breed; for Pomskies, this can be in the form of a brisk walk or leisurely jog.
