Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an incredibly unique and beloved breed of dog. One of the most interesting qualities of these animals is the combination of characteristics from both the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky parents. From the Pomeranian side of the family, Pomskies tend to have delightfully thick and fluffy coats, while from the Siberian Husky side, they often have those mesmerizing piercing blue eyes. Furthermore, their outgoing personalities tend to endear them to everyone they meet. Their intelligence and loveable nature make them both great companions and excellent training subjects.
Pomskies are considered to be hypoallergenic or low-allergen dogs. This is because their parents, Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies, are both relatively low-allergen dog breeds. However, this does not guarantee that your Pomky will be 100% hypoallergenic, as every individual dog will have their own combination of genes, which may cause them to be more or less prone to triggering allergies in humans.
Pomskies should not be fed bones, processed table scraps, raw seafood, onions, garlic, nuts, avocados, green tomatoes, chocolate, grapes, raisins, or sugary treats. It is important to feed your Pomsky a high-quality dry kibble that is specially formulated to meet the unique needs of small breed dogs. Additionally, it is essential to avoid overfeeding your Pomsky, as this breed is prone to obesity.
Before bringing your Pomsky home, it's important to prepare your home for their arrival. First, make sure you have a comfortable place for your Pomsky to sleep and toys for them to play with. Secondly, have their food and dishes ready. Lastly, be sure to have a secure area for them to exercise and explore. Additionally, it may be beneficial to research the breed and understand its specific needs like needing regular grooming and different environmental conditions that might be necessary for them to be comfortable in your home.
Pomskies vary in size depending on the parent breeds, so they can range from small to medium-sized dogs. Generally, the Pomeranian parent breed is considered to be small, and if a Pomsky's parents are both small then the Pomsky is likely to be petite in size as well. That being said, the Siberian Husky parent breed often produces larger Pomskies, so it is possible to have a larger Pomsky as well. Therefore, although some Pomskies are small, overall it is not safe to assume that all Pomskies are considered small dogs.
Pomskies are highly active dogs and very energetic. They have a typically strong desire to stay active, which includes plenty of physical activity and lots of mental stimulation. They will need regular walks and playtime with their owners, or risk developing behavior issues like digging and barking. They make great running or jogging companions and also love to play catch and Frisbee. Pomskies especially love agility and obedience training, so they often excel in these activities.
Generally, Pomskies are incredibly gentle and loving dogs that get along very well with kids. They have an intuitive understanding of how to interact with children, often being gentle and tolerant when around them. Pomskies are intelligent and eager to learn, so they can easily be trained to interact in appropriate ways with children. While some Pomsky owners opt for socialization classes to help their pooches interact around children, it generally makes for a safe environment to play and react positively. All in all, Pomskies tend to be wonderful companions for kids and make for a great family pet.
Training a Pomsky can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it's not necessarily an easy one. Each dog is different and training any canine requires consistency and dedication. It is recommended to start training your Pomsky as soon as possible with basic commands such as "sit", "stay" and "come". Additionally, it is also important to effectively socialize your Pomsky regularly and expose them to new environments and people.
