Questions & Answers
Pomskies are incredibly fun and friendly pets that have been gaining a lot of popularity recently. They are known for their bright personalities, intelligence, and affection, all while being relatively easy to care for. They are a mixed breed of the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, and when bred correctly can inherit the look, energy, and adaptability of both breeds. They are courageous and active, needing lots of love, attention, and exercise, but with some proper training, make excellent pets even in a big city.
Pomskies may not be hypoallergenic as they are a hybrid breed created from both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, two non-hypoallergenic breeds. While some hybrid breeds of dogs do have hypoallergenic coats, Pomskies do not have one consistent coat that can be labeled hypoallergenic, due to the unpredictability of the genes they inherit from each parent breed.
Pomskies (Pomeranian-Husky mix) have rather unique dietary needs so it’s important to choose a quality brand of dog food for them. The best dog food for Pomskies should be one that caters to their specific nutritional needs, such as higher protein levels and additional calcium for joint support. The food should also be rich in antioxidants for a healthy immune system and fortified with chelated minerals for better absorption. No matter which type of food you choose, make sure it is free of fillers such as corn, wheat, or soy.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky starts with being prepared. Make sure your home is Pomsky-proofed by removing plants, cleaning up any debris that may be hazardous, and securing objects that can be easily chewed on. Establish rules early and stick with them. Determine what is allowed and what is off-limits for your Pomsky. Consistently offer rewards for desirable behavior, such as verbal praise and snacks as rewards for good behavior.
Pomskies are not technically considered a big dog breed, though some can be bigger than others depending on the parenting breeds. Generally, their full-grown adult size can range anywhere from 12 to 30+ pounds. They are known for being an attractive hybrid of the beloved Pomeranian and the strong Siberian Husky. Though they don't reach the larger side of the spectrum, Pomskies can still be quite active and adventurous, so if you're looking for a companion to take with you on your outdoor adventures, this breed will fit such a role perfectly.
Just like any other breed, Pomskies need exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. The amount of exercise required depends on your pup's age, size, and behavioral tendencies. Generally, pets should get 30 minutes of activity each day and at least 20 minutes of that should be devoted to a walk. If your Pomsky is young and small, 15-20 minutes of walking per day is sufficient. If your Pomsky is older or larger, more walking may be necessary. To ensure your pup gets enough exercise, plan on devoting 30-45 minutes to walking each day.
Pomskies can be an excellent choice for first-time owners. They are intelligent, playful and loyal, so they can make great companions. Their small size and relatively low-maintenance coat make them easy to care for, and their affectionate nature makes them very loving dogs. Of course, as with any breed, potential new owners should research the breed before committing to owning a Pomsky to ensure they have the time, resources, and knowledge to meet the needs of the breed.
Training your Pomsky requires patience and commitment. First, be sure to establish yourself as the pack leader. Start by reinforcing basic commands such as sit, stay, come, etc. Give your pup plenty of positive reinforcement for following your commands. Reward-based training works best, such as verbal praise, treats, and toys. Avoid punishment-based training, as positive reinforcement works better for building trust between you and your pup. Additionally, provide plenty of physical and mental exercise like walks, jogging, training classes, and interactive games to keep your pup physically and mentally stimulated.
