Questions & Answers
A Pomsky (also known as a Husky Pom) is a designer hybrid breed created by crossbreeding a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. This combination of an adventurous, working class breed and a small lap-dog produces a hybrid with a bold, outgoing personality but a manageable, loving size. These dogs are incredibly loyal to their owners, making them great companions and family pets. They have a moderate energy level and are surprisingly intelligent, so they can learn and remember commands quickly.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed, so there is no definitive answer as to whether they are non-shedding or not. Generally speaking, most Pomskies are low-shedding, which means that they will shed some fur but not as much as many other breeds. Ultimately, the level of shedding is determined by the individual dog's genetics. When one parent is a low-shedding Pomeranian, the chances of having a non-shedding Pomskie increase. It is recommended to carefully consider a potential Pomskie's parentage before bringing them into your home.
As with any breed, it is important to give your Pomsky a balanced diet that meets their specific nutritional needs. Avoid feeding them anything that contains potentially harmful ingredients such as chocolate, alcohol, sugar or caffeine as these can negatively affect their health. Additionally, it is not advisable to give them any human food, as food intended for human consumption can contain toxins that are more harmful for animals. Many human foods such as raisins, onions, garlic, and avocado can be toxic for Pomskies.
Preparing for a new Pomsky is no small task. To ensure a successful transition, you should create a safe and comfortable living environment for your new pup. Start by purchasing the right size of crate – one that is roomy enough for your pup to move around and turn around, but not so large that he feels he can eliminate in one section. Next, ensure your Pomsky has the proper nutrition. Choose a food that meets his age, activity level, and any special needs he may have. Finally, plan for proper obedience training and socializing.
Pomskies vary in size, but generally speaking, they are on the smaller side of the canine spectrum. Depending on whether the Pomsky is more Pomeranianor Husky-dominant, they can range from 5-25lbs and 10-15 inches at the shoulder. As such, they aren't considered to be "big" dogs as compared to bigger breeds like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers which are usually much more substantial in size. That said, due to the Husky parent breed, they tend to have a larger presence than their smaller size would indicate.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Pomsky each day will depend on their age, size, and health. Adult Pomskies should get a minimum of 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. Puppies should get a minimum of 15 minutes each day and can increase up to 20-30 minutes of activity as they get older. It's important to provide them with both aerobic and anaerobic exercise during their walk, especially if they are overweight. Remember to monitor your Pomsky for signs of fatigue and never take them out in extreme heat or cold.
Pomskies tend to be excellent family pets due to their easy-going nature and playful personality. As with any dog, proper obedience training is important, as is socializing your pup from an early age. That being said, Pomskies tend to get along great with kids if raised correctly. They are usually very gentle, patient, and full of affection, making them an ideal companion for children of all ages. Furthermore, Pomskies can be easily trained to understand basic commands, which can help create a stable and consistent environment for your children to enjoy.
Training a Pomsky can be relatively straightforward, but it requires consistency, patience, and dedication. You'll need to develop a positive reinforcement system and a set of rewards and incentives that work for both you and your Pomsky. Depending on the age of your pup, they may need more reinforcement and consistency than an older pup. In addition, you'll want to create a schedule and stick to it by learning what motivates and engages your pup. Once you've established a schedule and rewards, you'll be able to start introducing more complex commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'.
