Questions & Answers
Pomskies, or Pomeranian Huskies, are a designer breed of dog considered to be part of the Spitz family. This family contains a variety of small to medium-sized breeds, usually with thick fur, pointed ears, and a wooly undercoat. Because Pomskies are a relatively new breed, established only within the last twenty years or so, there is no official or uniform classification for them. They have been recognized by a few organizations including the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), but not all kennel clubs recognize them as a separate breed.
Pomskies are considered to be considered a low shed breed, but this isn't always the case and their coat may vary. As the Pomsky is a hybrid breed, the amount of shedding can vary from pup to pup and even within the same litter. Generally though, Pomskies are quite low maintenance when it comes to shedding and their thick, double coat usually requires very little effort to stay looking well-groomed.
Pomskies, like all dogs, have specific dietary needs that should be taken into account when planning their meals. Generally speaking, they require a high-protein, low-fat diet that includes carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in order to keep them healthy and active. Generally, grain-free formulas work best, as they are more easily digestible. It's important to consult your veterinarian to decide the best diet for your specific Pomsky as their dietary needs vary from breed to breed.
Preparation for your new Pomsky is a key factor in ensuring your new pup feels safe and comfortable in their new home. To begin, create a designated area for your pup to have all their items, including food, water, bedding, toys, and any other items that make them feel at home. Additionally, you should also puppy-proof your home by blocking off any areas that could be hazardous such as stairs, low furniture they can slip under or access to electrical cords. Additionally, make sure all items in your home are not easily positioned for any damage they may cause when playing.
Pomskies are generally considered to be mid-sized dogs, typically ranging between 10-15 inches in height and weighing up to 20-30 pounds. However, this can vary depending on the parents used for breeding, with some specimens larger than average. Many Pomskies will appear larger or smaller, given the varied combinations of their parent breeds, the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. These differences in size, along with their very friendly and loving temperament, make Pomskies great family pets regardless of size.
Walking your Pomsky is a wonderful way to provide daily exercise and mental stimulation. The amount of walking needed to keep your Pomsky healthy and entertained is dependent on several factors, including the age and size of the dog, and the environment. Generally, a Pomsky should get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, in addition to playtime. If your Pomsky is particularly active or gets excited when playing, you should aim for up to an hour of walk time.
Pomskies can usually get along with other pets if they're introduced properly. They have an intelligent and alert nature which can make them receptive to the presence of other animals. It's important to communicate with your Pomsky when introducing them to other pets as this helps them remain confident and willing to accept other animals into their environment. Proper socialization is key for helping Pomskies get along with other pets, so be sure to invest enough time and energy into the process.
Training your Pomsky can be an enjoyable and rewarding process. The first step is to establish yourself as a leader and create a bond of trust with your pup. This can be achieved by rewarding your pup with treats and positive reinforcement when they do something right. It's also important to set clear boundaries and expectations. Let your pup know what behaviors are required and, just as importantly, which behaviors are not acceptable by providing feedback both verbal and physical when necessary. Try using commands; such as 'sit' or 'come' and using treats and praise as rewards when your pup follows directions.
