Questions & Answers
Pomskies are considered to be Hybrid dogs, as they are a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. As such, they are not a single established breed. However, this hybrid often provides a combination of traits from its two breeds. Pomskies tend to be small and compact dogs, though their size can be anywhere from 4-28 lbs and depend largely on the degree of their Pomeranian parent’s genetics. They are often friendly and active dogs, known for their affectionate and people-oriented demeanor.
Pomskies are not considered non-shedding dogs. While they do shed much less than larger, double-coated breeds, Pomskies have a dense, double-layered coat that requires regular grooming and brushing to reduce shedding. If a Pomsky is neglected in this regard, their coat may become matted. Ultimately, it depends on the owner's dedication to keeping their Pomsky's coat groomed and maintained that will determine its shedding level. Some owners report that their Pomskies shed very little, while others report that they have moderate to heavy shedding.
Feeding your Pomsky will vary depending on their age and size. Since they are a relatively small breed, they will usually need a higher concentration of protein with lower amounts of carbohydrates. Feeding them healthy amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables is important as well. It is best to provide them with high-quality dog food formulated specifically for small breeds, or better yet to make sure the food you give them is natural and organic. Be sure to read the ingredients listed on the food and avoid anything that contains unnecessary additives or fillers.
Pomskies, like all other breeds, have certain requirements for diet, exercise, and grooming that can vary depending on the type of Pomsky. Generally speaking, they do need more exercise than some breeds, and need to be kept indoors for the most part, rather than outside, as their coats are not suited for extreme outdoor temperatures. They should also have regular baths and brushing to maintain their long coat and to keep any mats from forming. Diet is important, and they need a good quality food, preferably one that is specifically designed for this breed type.
Pomskies are known to be quite small in size, generally ranging from 8-14 pounds when fully grown. Although toy sizes are available, the majority of this hybrid breed will be within the small-medium size range. Pomskies are considered to be very energetic and lively, looking much larger than they actually are due to their thick and fluffy double-coat. Despite their playful nature, they are not really a giant breed, but instead are a great size for owners who are looking for a pint-sized sidekick.
Pomskies are an active breed, so they typically require a significant amount of exercise. Ideally, they should be taken out for a walk or jog for 10-20 minutes at least twice daily. Additionally, it is helpful to play games such as fetch, tug-of-war, or fetch in the yard as a way to release any pent up energy. Having a fenced yard can be ideal for a Pomsky, as it can provide an safe enclosed area for them to run free and also helps the owner control the amount of activity their pup partakes in.
Pomskies can make great companions for first-time owners! Pomskies are intelligent and loyal, and generally playful and energetic. However, due to their hybrid nature, they can sometimes possess a combination of characteristics from both breeds, which means that it's important for first-time owners to do their research and be prepared. Pomskies do require more care than many other breeds, such as regular grooming (with a slicker brush and comb) and socialisation.
Pomskies are surprisingly quite intelligent! By nature, these hybrid dogs possess the intelligence of both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, both of which are fairly intelligent breeds. Pomskies have been known for their eagerness to please and ability to learn quickly. Additionally, they retain information well. With proper socialization, consistent training, and plenty of mental stimulation, Pomskies can be taught a variety of skills and tricks, and will often even develop their own independent problem-solving strategies.
