Questions & Answers
Pomskies are one of the most unique and interesting hybrid breeds due to their combination of two very different but equally beloved dog breeds the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. They often have the affectionate personalities of a Pomeranian, combined with the athleticism of a Husky. Additionally, they are as sweet and loving towards people as any other breed, but they can also be playful and alert. Pomskies can even have a variety of coat colors, ranging from white to black, or even some combination of both.
Pomskies are typically considered low-shedding breeds, though there is no guarantee that they will be completely non-shedding. Most Pomskies have a double coat of thick, soft fur, which features the dense undercoat of a Pomeranian and the longer guard hairs of a Siberian Husky. This combination gives them a significantly lower shedding coat which makes them a great pick for those who suffer from allergies. That said, being low-shedding does not mean that individual Pomskies will not shed at all; their coats still need regular grooming and maintenance.
Pomskies should never be fed any type of human food, processed dog food, or treats that contain ingredients such as preservatives, artificial coloring, and sweeteners. Pomskies, like all other puppies, can have a sensitive digestive system and they may experience nutritional deficiencies when fed 'people food'. Pomskies should also avoid foods with high fat content, like fatty cuts of steak or hamburgers. It is best to feed your Pomsky an age-appropriate, balanced diet that is designed specifically for small-breed puppies.
Before you bring home your new Pomsky, there are a few essential items you should stock up on. First, make sure to get a crate that is the right size for your pup. Pomskies are small dogs, so you don't want a crate that's too large or uncomfortable. You'll also need to buy food and water dishes, a comfortable bed, leash and collar, and plenty of high-quality chew toys and treats. Don't forget a brush and grooming supplies, especially if you have a long-haired breed.
Pomskies' size is dependent on their parent breeds, and can range from small to medium. Generally speaking, the average Pomsky is 12 to 15 inches in height when fully grown. They typically weigh between 13 30 pounds, although there is a range in this as well. Their coats can range in length and density, depending on their parent breeds. Pomskies' size can also vary from one dog to another due to the way they are bred, as well as the amount of exercise they receive. Ultimately, Pomskies have a genetic range and are very playful and active dogs.
Pomskies absolutely love to swim! They are an excellent mix of the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian breeds, so they tend to inherit a strong desire for water. Often, they will gravitate instinctively towards lakes, ponds and rivers. They are a great breed for swimming and playing in the water due to their muscular, strong build. Pomskies are also incredibly intelligent, so teaching them to swim and enjoy their surrounding is never too difficult. In fact, they often won't want to leave.
Pomskies are an excellent choice for first-time owners, as they are generally a very loving and loyal breed. They also tend to be relatively easy to train, as they are highly intelligent and eager to please. While they are active and require mental and physical stimulation, they are usually content to bond closely with their owners and can adapt to a variety of lifestyles. Provided they are properly socialized at a young age and receive adequate exercise, Pomskies can make hugely rewarding pets for novice owners.
Training a Pomsky can be a challenging process, however it can definitely be manageable with the right approach. Working with a certified canine trainer and developing a tailored program that is well tailored to your Pomsky's individual needs can be a great starting point. Being consistent with positive reinforcement along with patience and dedication are also important factors when training a Pomsky. Doing something as simple as setting up a regular schedule for activities and feeding can also contribute to the training process. Keeping this schedule consistent can help instill routines and understanding in your pet.
