Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a relatively new hybrid breed that is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club. They are a crossbreed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Generally, Pomskies are small in size, usually weighing between 10 and 30 pounds and standing around 15 inches tall. These loyal and playful dogs can come in a wide variety of colors, coat styles, and sizes, depending on how much of each parent breed is present.
The Pomsky breed has a very unique coat, unlike other breeds! It features a combination of both the Husky and the Pomeranian parents' coats. Usually it is medium-long and silky to the touch. It comes in a variety of color variations, including white, gray, brindle, and black, with distinct and vibrant markings on the face, neck, chest and legs. Its typical density is also somewhere in between the two, with a thick undercoat. The coat often requires frequent brushing, and requires regular upkeep.
Pomskies typically eat what is known as a commercial dog food. This includes kibble, wet food, and treats that are specifically designed for a Pomsky's dietary needs. These foods are typically tailored to fit the size, activity level, and age of your pup, and can be purchased from most major pet food stores. Additionally, Pomskies will benefit from fresh meats, vegetables, and fruits. However, make sure to research which foods are safe and healthy for your pup prior to introducing them into your Pomsky's diet.
Before you decide to purchase a Pomsky, there are a few essential items you should have. First and foremost, you should have a comfy, safe place for your pup to sleep, such as a large dog bed or crate. You should also purchase all the necessary food, bowls, toys, treats, and cleaning supplies for your pup. It's important to get a collar, leash, and tag with your pup's name and your contact information.
The size of a Pomsky can vary from dog to dog. Generally, a Pomskies' size is considered to be "small to medium-sized," with males typically being larger than females. As for exact measurements, adult male Pomskies usually stand at 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh between 20 and 30 pounds, while females generally reach 9 to 14 inches and weigh 15 to 25 pounds. Ultimately, a well-bred adult Pomsky should be proportionate and well balanced in terms of build and size.
As with any pet, it is important to make sure your Pomsky is exercised, both for its physical and mental health. A general guideline for the amount of exercise a Pomsky should have is around 45 minutes to an hour a day, broken into short walks spread out throughout the day. However, the amount can vary depending on the age and individual needs of your Pomsky. For puppies, it is especially important that you don't over-exercise them, as their joints and bones are still developing.
Pomskies can be great companions to other pets if they are properly socialized. With some patience, love, and a lot of positive reinforcement, your Pomsky can learn how to get along and interact safely with other animals. Every individual pet is different so it's important you observe and guide the interactions to ensure everyone is happy and comfortable. Generally, early socialization with familiar, friendly animals is the best approach to help prevent any conflicts in the future. If run into any problems, a veterinary behaviorist can provide valuable help in developing an appropriate socialization plan for your pet.
Training a Pomsky can be challenging for some, but with the right technique and practices it can also be relatively straightforward. It is important to consider your individual level of experience with this breed before deciding to train it yourself. Depending on the amount of energy and willpower a particular Pomsky has, training could take weeks or months, and it is best to start teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come' as early as possible.
