Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an adorable hybrid breed, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. These charming dogs can weigh anywhere from 8 to 30 pounds and can stand up to 16 inches tall. They have thick double coats, with colors ranging from black and white, to brown and white, or hues of red and cream. Pomskies have an energetic outlook and makes an excellent companion due to their friendly, loyal demeanor. They are also very playful and those with families and children find them to be quite entertaining.
While no canine, including the Pomsky, is entirely hypoallergenic, the fact is that the Pomsky's thick, double-layered coat is designed to keep the majority of allergens at bay. That said, there is no guarantee that a Pomsky will not cause allergies for some individuals. It's essential to do your research to see if any family members have allergic reactions to certain breeds, then research further to ensure that a Pomsky is the best fit for the family.
As with all breeds of dogs, it’s always important to be aware of the foods you are giving to your Pomsky. Certain everyday foods commonly found in the fridge, pantry, or treat-aisle of your local grocery store can be dangerous or toxic for Pomskies. It is important to avoid giving your Pomsky anything that contains theobromine, caffeine, alcohol, macadamia nuts, milk and dairy products, garlic and onions, sugar, grapes, raisins, avocados, corn on the cob, mushrooms, and raw bread dough.
Pomskies, as with all dog breeds, require the same general care and needs as other breeds. This includes proper nutrition, exercise, grooming, and veterinary care. Additionally, due to their thick coat and need for a healthy diet, they may require a bit more maintenance than some other breeds. Because they are a fairly young breed, with little genetic diversity in the gene pool, they may be more prone to hereditary problems, and more specialized care may be needed if hereditary problems become an issue.
The size of your Pomsky puppy can vary greatly. Some are quite tiny and stay fairly small while others can reach up to 20 pounds when fully grown. It all depends on the breed lines since Pomsky’s are a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Generally speaking, they tend to be on the smaller side, usually between 15-30 pounds when fully grown. However, there are exceptions, and it can be difficult to know in advance of what size your pup will be when fully grown.
Pomskies are an active breed and require more physical activity than a standard toy-dog. On average, they need about 60 minutes of exercise each day, which should include a combination of walking, running, and playing activities. This exercise should be divided throughout the day to ensure that the Pomsky is getting a full-body workout. When providing exercises for a Pomsky, it is important to ensure that the exercise is both stimulating and enjoyable for the dog. This can include activities such as fetch, frisbee, agility, and flyball.
Pomskies naturally have an amicable disposition, and will often get along well with other pets such as cats and dogs. With proper socialization and training, a Pomsky can usually form a strong bond with several different types of pet. However, as with all new pets, it is important to introduce them slowly and carefully to ensure that the transition is smooth. It is also essential to make sure the Pomsky gets enough exercise and stimulation; a bored dog can often grow hostile towards fellow animals.
Training a Pomsky can be done, although it may not be considered 'easy'. These dogs possess strong-willed personalities, so a lot of patience and consistency from the handler is needed. In addition, these dogs need a lot of mental and physical stimulation in order to avoid boredom, which can lead to negative behavioral issues. The key to success is providing clear and consistent instructions to the pup, rewarding positive behavior with treats and verbal praise, and redirecting them with gentle corrections when misbehaving.
