Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting aspects of Pomskies is their hybrid nature. As a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, the Pomskie breed can demonstrate characteristics of both parent breeds. For example, a Pomskie may have the thick double coat of a Husky, yet be smaller in size and with cheerier temperament like a Pomeranian. They also tend to have the Husky's intelligent and active nature, but the facial structure, alert eyes, and smaller size of a Pomeranian.
Pomskies' coats are a combination of their parent breeds' coats, Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. Therefore, whether or not the hybrid is non-shedding depends on the genetics of the specific dog. Generally speaking, because Pomeranians and Huskies are both breeds that shed, you can expect some sort of shedding from the Pomskies. However, some Pomskies may have a coat that is more similar to the Pomeranian, making them much less likely to shed than a Siberian Husky.
It is important to feed Pomskies a high-quality diet formulated for their size and activity level. Pomskies should not be fed chocolate, onions, tomatoes, grapes, avocado, macadamia nuts, or anything with high-fructose corn syrup or a large amount of sugar. Feeding these items to a Pomsky can cause weight gain, serious illnesses like pancreatitis, and even death from chocolate poisoning.
Preparing your home for a new Pomsky can seem daunting. The first thing to consider is your Pomsky's safety. Make sure the area is pet-proof by removing possible hazards and placing any toxic substances out of reach. Additionally, set up a space for your pup with all the necessary items like bedding, food, toys, and supplies such as cleaning supplies and grooming products. Next, you will want to schedule a vet visit for an overall check-up and to make sure your pet is up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations.
Pomskies are generally considered to be medium-sized dogs, though there can be a lot of variance between individual dogs. On average, Pomskies weigh between 15 and 30 lbs, reaching a maximum height at the shoulder of about 14-16” tall, though there are some that can reach up to 20 lbs and taller than that. It's important to note that Pomskies aren't full-grown until they reach 2 years of age, and can continue to grow and fill out until then.
Absolutely -but keep in mind that Pomskies are considered a high-energy breed! It's important to ensure your pet has had plenty of exercise and is healthy before going running. Before you take off, consider whether the temperature is suitable for running with your pup. During the summer months, temperatures can get too high and uncomfortable for a Pomsky. While you're running, watch for signs that your pup may be overheated and require a break. Don't let him get too ahead or fall too far behind.
Pomskies have been known to get along well with other pets, like cats and dogs. However, this is not a guarantee that they'll be compatible with every pet. Pomskies are high-energy and can be quick to bark, so it's important to introduce them into other pet families slowly and carefully, and to pay attention to how every animal is responding. With patience and monitoring, however, it is definitely possible for Pomskies and other pets to become good friends.
Pomskies are indeed intelligent dogs, as their parent breeds the Pomeranian and Husky, are both highly intelligent. They can learn many commands and tricks and can even be taught to solve puzzles. They are particularly fast learners and can pick up instructions quickly. Pomskies can also form strong bonds with their owners, recognizing their faces and voices, and responding positively to love and attention. They are social dogs and can fit into many different roles, such as guard, companion, and service dog, thanks to their intelligence and ability to recognize their owner's needs.
