Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an incredibly unique dog breed, and the most interesting aspect of them is their hybrid nature. They are a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, meaning that they take characteristics from both breeds. This hybridization often results in an incredibly unique and sometimes unpredictable combination of traits, from looks to personality. Pomskies may have Husky markings and tendencies, but with a Pomeranian size, or vice versa. The possibilities are basically endless, making them an endlessly intriguing breed. Additionally, Pomskies are known for being an extraordinarily loyal and intelligent breed.
Pomskies are hybrid dogs that are bred from a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Though a Pomsky doesn't have a generic set of traits that would classify them in any particular way, it is commonly believed that they may be hypoallergenic due to a possible combination of hairs and fur combinations that could come from either of their parents. As an F1 or first generation hybrid, it is recommended that individuals be tested for any allergies or sensitivities when considering owning a Pomsky.
Pomskies are a mixed-breed dog, so it is important to feed them a food that caters to multiple breeds. A food specifically developed for small breeds with high energy is ideal for Pomskies. Royal Canin X-Small Adult formula is an excellent choice as it contains adapted levels of nutrients and special kibble that fit the small mouths of Pomskies. This food checks off all the important boxes with its precise levels of calcium and phosphorous for strong bones, high protein for muscle tone, and omega-3 and 6 fatty acids for a healthy coat.
Preparing for a new Pomsky requires a commitment to ensuring your new pet is safe and content in their new home. To best prepare, familiarize yourself with Pomsky breed characteristics in terms of personality, energy, and health. Research veterinary care, resources, dog-training classes, and the physical needs of a Pomsky. Make sure you are able to commit to their lifelong care and activities. Gather supplies like a leash, crate, bed, food bowls, toys, and age-appropriate food.
Every Pomsky puppy is unique and while there is no guarantee as to the exact size of your puppy, most Pomskies will grow to be approximately 10-15 inches in height when fully grown. The weight of your puppy when fully grown usually ranges from anywhere between 15-30 pounds. These figures are of course just an estimate and may vary depending on the parents of the puppy, diet and exercise regime, and care.
Generally speaking, Pomskies should be walked around 20 to 30 minutes per day. This will vary based on the age and energy level of the individual dog. However, regardless of age, it is important to make sure that the walks are at a good brisk pace. This should help to keep your pup healthy and from becoming overweight or obese. Periodic exercise in a safe environment is essential for any dog, but especially for a breed as active as a Pomsky. Additionally, the walks can be split up into two separate five to fifteen-minute sessions throughout the day, if needed.
Pomskies can be great family pets, especially when it comes to children. They can form deep bonds with their families, including any young children in the home. They're known for being loyal, sociable and loving towards those they consider part of their family. They're also known for being affectionate and patient, which can be great for kids. However, they can sometimes have a strong prey drive, meaning it's important to keep an eye on them when children are around.
Training a Pomsky is not as difficult as it might seem! The best and most effective way to train a Pomsky is to be consistent and have patience. It is important to stay consistent with training commands, and to reward good behavior. Gradual reward and positive reinforcement with treats are great tools to help train your Pomsky. It's also important to remember you should never use physical punishment or negative reinforcement when training. It's essential to build a trusting relationship with your pup, and this should come first.
