Questions & Answers
Pomskies belong to the Spitz-type dog breed, which includes other familiar breeds such as Akitas, Chow Chows, and Pomeranians. Often referred to as a designer breed, Pomskies are created by crossing a purebred Siberian Husky with a purebred Pomeranian. They usually come in small to medium sizes, ranging from 10 to 15 inches in height and 10 to 30 pounds in weight, so they are considered a type of small medium-sized breed.
Pomskies have a coat that is not considered hypoallergenic. However, some individuals may find that they may have a better reaction to Pomskies than with other dog breeds. This is because the Pomsky is the result of a breed with two coatsthe Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, meaning that these dogs do not shed as much. Even so, people with allergies should consider that any pet could cause an allergic reaction and should do their research prior to adoption.
It is important not to overfeed Pomskies, as with all other dogs, as their stomachs are delicate and can easily become upset. It is important to avoid giving Pomskies anything from the garbage can, including table scraps, as these can contain dangerous toxins that can be harmful to them. Additionally, avoid giving Pomskies cooked bones, as these can easily break and splinter, and can cause choking due to blockage and can also cause injury from sharp edges. It is best to feed them only high-quality dog food specifically designed for their breed size and age.
It's important to get your home ready for your new Pomsky before their arrival! To ensure they can settle into their new environment, start by making sure they have ample space to move and play. Pet-proof your home, especially the areas your pup will have access to, to prevent them from chewing on electrical wires or ingesting anything that can make them ill. Next, create a safe space for them: a secure crate with a warm blanket and plenty of toys for them to play with.
Pomskies can vary in size depending on the combination of their parent breeds, Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. Typically, however, they are considered small dogs ranging from 8 to 15 pounds, with heights ranging from 15 to 20 inches. Though they may be small in stature, Pomskies have big hearts and are very loyal to their owners. Many of their traits and characteristics are also unpredictable and come from both their parents. Pomskies often have a lot of energy with a playful and curious attitude and they enjoy being active and need plenty of playtime and exercise.
When it comes to how many minutes you should walk your Pomsky each day, it really depends on the individual pup's breed and age. Generally speaking, adult Pomskies need about between two to three walks a day, about 20 minutes each; however, for puppies this is quite a bit more. Ideally, puppies should be getting up to five walks a day, taking anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes each.
Pomskies can get along well with other pets if properly socialized from a young age. These adorable bundles of energy are intelligent and often respond positively to social cues from other pets. They love the companionship of other animals, and will often find ways to interact and play with them in a safe and healthy way. With patience and dedication, you can create an atmosphere that is comfortable for your Pomsky and your other animals alike. It's important to remain aware of your pet's feelings and behaviors and promptly intervene if any issues arise.
Training your Pomsky should be approached thoughtfully; they are highly intelligent and sensitive dogs that require a patient leader. To start with, make sure you are consistent in your messaging and remain positive; positive reinforcement is more powerful than punishing bad behavior. Start by teaching them simple commands like "sit" and "come," and offer treats and praise when they obey. When more complex commands need to be taught, break down the instructions to small chunks and use the same reinforced reward method. The key is to remain consistent and patient in your approach and reward even small successes.
