Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a much-loved designer breed of dog that was created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. They make excellent companions as they are highly intelligent, friendly, loyal, and very affectionate towards their families. Pomskies can inherit qualities from either parent breed. Typically they are small to medium-sized, have a thick, furry double coat, with a fox-like face and erect ears that resemble those of a Husky. Some will have brown and blue eyes, just like Huskies.
Managing allergies with Pomskies is possible, but not always easy. While all dogs can potentially cause an allergic reaction, Pomskies are bred to be hypoallergenic. Even so, a certain amount of exposure to a Pomsky will be required to find out if someone is truly allergic. To reduce the chance of triggering an allergic reaction, start by building up exposure gradually. During these opportunities, keep an eye out for signs of symptoms including sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or itchy eyes or skin.
Pomskies may not have very special dietary needs compared to other breeds. However, as hybrid dogs, they are likely to inherit varying combinations of both Pomeranian and Siberian Husky traits, and this could include diverse nutritional needs as well. Generally speaking, it is recommended that your Pomsky should maintain an appropriate weight with a high-quality, high-protein, low-fat diet. It's also important to make sure they are receiving essential vitamins and minerals to promote healthy skin and coat, as well as strong bones and muscles.
When you’re getting a Pomsky, there are a few essentials you’ll need to have ready. These include a collar and leash, a crate for training and housebreaking, food and water bowls, quality food made specifically for puppies, chew toys, nail clippers, a brush and comb, a mattress and a few puppy beds, and puppy pee pads.
Pomskies can vary in size and are generally classified as a small to medium-sized dog. These designer dogs are usually somewhere between 12-17 inches (30-43 cm) in height and 10-20 pounds (5-9 kg) in weight. While they are not the same size as a large dog like a golden retriever or a German shepherd, Pomskies are larger than many other dog breeds and so can certainly be considered 'big' when compared to mini and toy breeds.
Pomskies are an active breed, and they require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky heritage of the breed mean that they are very active dogs that need a lot of activity for them to stay at their prime. This can include brisk walks, jogs, runs, hikes, and playtime. Depending on your individual Pomsky, they may need anywhere from a half-hour to two hours of exercise daily some more, some less, but they can obviously need more if you have an exceptionally active pup.
Pomskies can definitely make a great addition to the family! Pomskies are known for being sweet-natured, intelligent, and affectionate. Not only that, but they are also very loyal and will bond deeply with their family members. Pomskies also love being active, so they'll be the perfect companion whether you're going on a family jog or lounging around at home. Furthermore, since they are small-medium sized dogs they don't need a ton of space and can live comfortably in the city or the country.
Training your Pomsky can be a fun and rewarding experience, as it will also foster a close and trusting relationship between the two of you! The most important thing to remember is to be consistent. Pomskies are highly intelligent and learn quickly, but can also become easily confused or distracted if they don't understand what's expected of them. Be patient and use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Start with the basics such as Sit, Stay, Come, and Leave It. A regular schedule should be established for exercise, playtime, and relaxation. Introduce new commands gradually and keep sessions short.
