Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer dog breed created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. This hybrid is becoming increasingly popular due to their puppy-like appearance and traits of both a Pomeranian and a Husky. Pomskies generally have a medium-length thick fur, which sheds regularly, and requires weekly brushing and occasional bathing. Pomskies can vary in size, with some nearing up to 30 pounds when fully grown. They are incredibly social animals and require a companionship, both human and canine.
Pomskies themselves do not typically cause allergies in people. However, just like any other breed of dog, they are susceptible to environmental allergens like dust, mold, and pollen, which can affect their health and cause allergic reactions. While individuals that are allergic to other animals are likely to be allergic to Pomskies, it is possible to reduce the risks. Be sure to groom your Pomsky regularly to remove any allergens, such as dust or pollen, that may be stuck to its fur and keep them well away from any areas that are highly allergenic.
Pomskies typically eat a diet consisting of high-quality dry kibble that's formulated to meet their specific dietary needs. As with all dogs, it is important to speak with a veterinarian in order to determine the perfect food type and quantity for the individual Pomsky's needs. Additionally, many owners will offer their pets moistened kibble, freeze-dried foods, and wet food free from artificial preservatives and additives. As a treat, Pomskies may respond very well to healthy snacks such as cooked vegetables, fruits, and plain yogurt.
Pomsky dogs can require some special considerations. Being a hybrid breed of dog, it is important to be aware of any potential health issues, different nutrition and exercise requirements, as well as ensuring that they are receiving appropriate mental stimulation. As a hybrid they have the potential to inherit issues from both of their parent breeds, specifically those related to their size. Being small dogs, they can be prone to injury or exacerbated health problems if they are not well taken care of. Common health problems can include hip dysplasia and eye diseases.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large. Generally, they tend to be on the smaller side, with many adults being between 8 and 14 inches tall at the shoulder; however, some Pomskies can reach up to 18 inches in height. When it comes to weight, they range from 3-9 pounds; though they can weigh up to 20 pounds if they possess Siberian husky genes. All in all, Pomsky sizes can vary dramatically, with each individual displaying different characteristics.
Absolutely! As a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, Pomsky dogs are active animals that enjoy plenty of exercise and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, due to their small size, long distance running isn't usually recommended, but don't worry -you can still take your pooch running. A light jogging session or an extended walk is the perfect way to take your pup for a run. Your Pomsky will enjoy getting some fresh air and stretching its legs, while you get to appreciate its bright personality and lovely coat.
Pomskies are an excellent choice for first-time dog owners because they are a mix of two small dog breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. Their size means they require less exercise and space than larger breeds, while their innate intelligence and friendly personalities make them easy to train. They are generally healthy and have a lifespan of 12-15 years. They do need a lot of socialization and since they can be quite vocal, they may not be the best pet for those living in apartments or with close neighbours.
The amount of exercise and training needed for a Pomsky will vary depending on the individual dog. Generally speaking, Pomskies need around 30 minutes of exercise every day. This can be divided into several shorter sessions, such as 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon. Training should include both physical and mental exercise. Activities like go for walks, playing fetch, and teaching tricks all help stimulate a Pomsky's mind and keep them fit. Depending on your particular Pomsky, further exercise may be needed to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive.
