Questions & Answers
Pomskies are part Pomeranian and part Siberian Husky. They are considered a hybrid or designer breed and their classification is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Pomskies are most widely classified as a companion or toy breed as they typically range in size from are small to medium in size (5 to 20 pounds). They tend to have their characteristic husky markings with a long, thick double coat that can be black, orange, white, tan or multi-colored. They are intelligent, active, and loyal dogs that enjoy being around people.
Pomskies have a thick double-coat of fur, so they may shed occasionally. However, due to their lineage from both the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, Pomskies typically shed much less than other breeds. Grooming is important with Pomskies regular brushing will help collect the loose fur and keep shedding to a minimum. The breed's non-shedding trait makes them ideal for those who need a low-shedding dog, such as people with shorter hair, allergies, or someone who needs a social dog but doesn't want long fur to take care of.
Pomskies are a unique breed, so it's important to not feed them anything without consulting your vet first. Generally, they should avoid any human food that's high in processed sugars, fats, and preservatives since these ingredients could result in weight gain and other health problems. Fruits and vegetables are typically fine, but should always be given in moderation. Also, keep in mind that smaller breeds can be especially sensitive to certain foods, so be sure to check with your vet before giving your Pomsky anything new or unusual.
Pomsky dogs have their own special needs that must be addressed in order to ensure they stay healthy and happy. They require a proper diet that includes a balanced mix of proteins, grains, and vegetables. To complement their diet, they should also receive regular exercise to keep their bodies in top condition. In addition, they should get plenty of mental stimulation in the form of activities, like playing games, to keep them from getting bored. Grooming is also important to ensure their coats remain healthy and free of mats and tangles.
Pomskies come in two distinct sizes "tiny" and "standard." Tiny Pomskies usually come in a range between 4 to 7 pounds, while standard-sized Pomskies can reach anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds in weight. With that being said, it is important to note that the exact size of a Pomsky is dependent on its parents' genetics and size. Due to their hybrid nature, the size of a Pomsky could range anywhere from its two parent breeds. As such, potential owners should inquire with a breeder to determine the size of a particular pup.
Pomskies benefit from a moderate amount of exercise. Generally, the breed requires at least 30 minutes of activity daily, divided between walks, private playtime and trips to a doggy park. Scheduling two or three fifteen-minute walks, playing fetch for ten minutes and having a freestyle play session for five minutes helps meet the energetic needs of your Pomsky. It is also important to remember the mental activity that comes with exercising. Keeping your Pomsky mentally active in addition to physical activity helps to combat boredom and prevent behavior issues that can arise when they are inactive.
Pomskies can be a great choice for first-time owners. This breed has a lot of positive qualities that make them ideal for novice pet owners. They are generally friendly, easily trainable, and don't require a lot of special care which makes them relatively easy to manage. In addition, they have a relatively small size which is perfect for those in apartments, and they can get along well with both children and other pets. Pomskies are active animals, and they require regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay content and healthy.
Pomskies require a minimum of 20 minutes of activity per day. Although, depending on your lifestyle and the individual Pomsky's needs, it is recommended to plan for at least an hour of training and exercise. This would include mental stimulation such as providing toys or doing agility activities, as well as physical exercise like walks and play. Pomskies are a very active breed that loves to explore, so to provide the most enriching and healthy life for your Pomsky make sure to plan extra time for outside adventure or even better an off-leash dog park day!
