Questions & Answers
Pomskies are classified as a Hybrid breed, and are a cross between a pomeranian and a Siberian husky. They generally possess the poise and friendliness of a pomeranian and the strong build and gentle manner of the husky. Pomskies have a thick double coat, which requires regular grooming, due to their fur's high shedding potential. They are not considered a breed recognized by the American Kennel Club, partially due to their mongrel status and the unpredictable nature of crossbred dogs.
A Pomsky coat is typically a luxurious blend of two breeds that results in a beautiful and unique coat of fur. It typically has a soft and silky texture, with a light and fluffy feel. Its colors range from silvery blondes, creamy beiges, and bright reds, to dark grays and blacks. It also has unique markings between the two breeds, and can be curly, wavy, straight, or long and fluffy. It's also known for its insulating qualities, keeping your pet warm during the winter and cool during the summer months.
Pomskies should only be fed high-quality, nutrient-rich dog food specifically designed for small breeds. Human food should be avoided, as many common foods can be toxic for dogs. Foods such as chocolate, caffeine, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins are all dangerous and should not be given to Pomskies. Additionally, sugary snacks and unhealthy treats should be avoided, as these can result in obesity, dental problems, or even organ damage if consumed in large amounts.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky is a rewarding experience. It is important to do some research before bringing home any puppy, Pomsky included. Make sure you understand the breed’s unique characteristics and that it’s the best fit for your lifestyle. When your Pomsky arrives home, it is essential that you provide them the proper nutrition, exercise, grooming, and socialization they need to thrive. Spend some quality time each day with your puppy by teaching them basic commands and rewarding their good behavior with treats and lots of love.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes. Generally, they range from small to medium, though some oversized Pomskies can exist. Typical Pomskies will weigh between 7-20 lbs as adults and stand between 10-17 inches tall. It is important to note that due to their mixed breed lineage, one cannot predict with 100% accuracy the size an adult Pomsky will become. However, most breeders have an excellent understanding of their genetics and can offer an educated guess.
Pomskies are a mix of the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian, and due to this are likely to have a low to medium activity level. They are known to love running and swimming and can make for an excellent companion when given plenty of space to run. Their intelligence also means they can be trained for various outdoor activities with consistent and routine care. However, as with any breed, they should always be monitored and given regular exercise depending on their individual needs. All in all, Pomskies can make for active and energetic companions, with the right level of love and attention.
Pomskies are typically a good fit for households with children. Their affectionate, outgoing, and loyal personalities pairs well with the energy and enthusiasm of kids. Although they do need regular exercise, their short stature makes them ideal house pets when kids are around. With proper socialization and training, their intelligence should ensure that they respond positively to people of any age, but especially children. Pomskies' protective nature should also be considered when children are present since they will fiercely guard their owners and family, especially the youngest members.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Pomskies will vary depending on their individual personalities, age, and the type of training you are giving them. Generally, you should allow around 15-20 minutes per day of dedicated training if you want to guarantee good results. However, for puppies and dogs that have had very little interaction with humans, you may need to commit up to an hour of training each day. If your Pomskies are already experienced in basic obedience (sit, stay, come, etc.), just a few short sessions during the day should help them retain their skills.
