Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a relatively new hybrid dog breed that is a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. These energetic and intelligent dogs tend to have bright eyes, with a variety of colors, and a thick double coat. They are loving and loyal to their families, and although they can be slow to warm up to strangers, when properly socialized, they make great watchdogs. Pomskies require daily exercise and do best in an active home with plenty of attention and lots of playtime.
Pomskies are often listed as hypoallergenic due to their small size and the fact that their coats are usually very low-maintenance, however it is important to note that no breed is truly 100% hypoallergenic. While Pomskies are unlikely to cause allergies, it is still possible that someone could be allergic to them depending on their individual genetics. As always, it is important to do a test first with any breed before committing to a purchase, to ensure that allergies do not arise.
When looking for the best food to feed your Pomsky, there are a few important things to consider. First and foremost, your Pomsky's age should be taken into account when selecting a specific product as smaller dogs may require puppy food whereas older dogs will often need food specially formulated for seniors. Additionally, different sized Pomskies may require food with differing calorie counts, so an awareness of your Pomsky's size should also be taken into account.
Preparing for a new Pomsky is an exciting step to take! First, the most important thing to consider is pet-proofing your home. Remove any hazardous items that your pet may try to chew and make sure they don’t have access to kitchen garbage or items that may be dangerous to them. Second, decide how you’ll handle potty training. You’ll need a spot for your pup to go potty as well as something for them to relieve themselves on.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes. Generally, they are categorized into two major size groups: Toy or Standard. Toy Pomskies will generally weigh between 7 and 15 pounds, while Standard Pomskies can weigh up to 35 pounds. It is important to remember that no two Pomskies are exactly alike, so size variations can occur within the ranges mentioned. Pomskies are usually shorter than their purebred parent breeds, however cross-breeding between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky results in larger dogs that may not fit into the standard size categories.
Pomskies are known for being active and full of energy, and require an adequate amount of exercise for healthy physical and mental development. How much exercise they need careful depends on their age and lifestyle, but a good rule of thumb is to provide them with at least one hour of physical activity each day, including activities such as long walks, fetching, and agility training. Additionally, playtime with their owners and having access to a secure area to run around in can be an excellent way to meet their exercise needs.
Generally speaking, Pomskies do get along well with other pets. Some Pomskies are more comfortable around other dogs than other pets, but with proper introduction and supervision they can get along just fine with cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals. It is important to note, however, that Pomskies can be quite energetic and can unintentionally frighten or hurt other animals. The key is to ensure that proper training and socialization are taking place so that all the pets in the home can get along and feel comfortable with each other.
Training a Pomsky can be both challenging and rewarding. Unfortunately, there is no “one size fits all” approach as each dog's temperament and personality vary from pup to pup. That said, Pomskies are an energetic breed that is usually eager to learn. If you approach the training process with consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement, success will usually follow.
