Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer breed, a mixture between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Pomskies tend to be small dogs, usually weighing 12 to 25 pounds. They have a thick coat of fur which can range from being light to dark in color, and could even have some distinct markings such as white patches. As a breed, Pomskies are friendly and have plenty of energy. They require daily exercise, and they are often good candidates for agility, obedience, and therapy work due to their intelligence.
Pomskies are typically low-shedding and hypoallergenic dogs, so they will not normally cause you to have allergies. However, there is no guarantee that you won't have an allergic reaction to one, as it is possible that you might be allergic to the individual dog's dander, saliva, or urine. If you have pet allergies, it's always best to err on the side of caution and spend some time around the breed before deciding to adopt one.
The best dog food for Pomskies will depend on your individual pup's needs. Pomskies typically require a diet that is rich in protein, fat, and carbohydrates that have been carefully selected to meet the demands of this active and intelligent breed. It's best to avoid foods with high levels of grain, and to look for foods that contain high quality proteins from sources such as chicken, fish, and lamb. You should also opt for foods with balanced vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and necessary fatty acids.
To become the best Pomsky parent possible, it is important to spend plenty of time with your pup and be consistent in teaching them basic obedience commands. Schedule regular vet visits when recommended to ensure that your pup is in optimal health. Spend time daily walking and playing with your Pomsky to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Knowing your pup’s individual needs is essential to being a great parent so be sure to take the time to bond with and get to understand your furry friend.
Although the size of a Pomskies dog largely depends on the size of their parents, they are generally considered to be small dogs due to their hybridized nature. The Siberian Husky parent tends has been bred to be on the larger side, whereas the Pomeranian parent has been bred to be tiny, resulting in Pomskies puppies often averaging in size somewhere in the middle. As such, while they are not the smallest of all dog breeds, they typically remain far smaller than a full-bred Siberian Husky, which can weigh up to 60 pounds.
Generally, Pomskies do enjoy swimming; many are natural swimmers, but others may need some gentle encouragement. It's best to start slow and gradually introduce Pomskies to the water, helping them learn how to paddle and swim. Allowing them to take their time getting comfortable in the water and providing plenty of positive reinforcement when they do, is the best way to ensure a positive experience. As they become more comfortable, they may even enjoy chasing toys and splashing in the water. Some Pomskies may require a life vest for safety, although most don't need this.
Pomskies have the potential to get along with other pets if they are properly introduced. It's important to teach the Pomsky to respect boundaries with the other pet, and to provide positive reinforcement when the two animals interact with each other. It's also essential to monitor them closely during their first few meetings, in order to ensure that each animal is comfortable and safe. In addition, both pets should be spayed or neutered prior to introduction in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies and territorial disputes.
Training a Pomsky should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. It is recommended that for each day, break up at least 15 minutes of active training (i.e. commands, recall, etc.) and 15 minutes of social activities (i.e. running, playing, walking, etc.). This should be supplemented with 15 minutes of physical exercises (i.e. agility, jogging, etc.) and 5 minutes of positive reinforcement activities such as treats and praise.
