Questions & Answers
Pomskies are considered to be a designer breed because they are crosses between two other breeds: the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. This hybrid dog is relatively new to the canine world and have become popular among many dog lovers due to pomskies' lively personalities, loyalty, and affectionate nature. They are classified as a medium-sized breed and typically weigh 15-30 pounds with a double coat, much like a Husky. Additionally, Pomskies have a very attractive and unique look which appeals to many people.
Managing allergies with Pomskies requires several steps. First, consider the types of allergens that your pet may be exposed to. These can include dust mites, flea droppings, and pollen. Once these allergens are identified, it is important to do everything possible to reduce exposure. This can involve regularly cleaning or vacuuming the house, changing your pet's bedding often, using special shampoos, and using air purifiers to reduce airborne allergens.
Pomskies should not be fed anything that contains chocolate, onions or garlic as these are toxic to their bodies. Additionally, foods such as raw eggs, raw meat, and unpasteurized dairy should be avoided as well due to the potential of bacterial contamination. They should also not eat items like grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or any other type of nut as these too are toxic for Pomskies.
When getting a Pomsky, there are some essential items to consider purchasing prior to bringing the pup home. First, you'll need a collar and leash. Also, select a durable food and water dish to accommodate your pet, keeping the dishes separate so there is no confusion. Additionally, it's important to have an extra-large, comfortable bed so your pup can snuggle up and get the rest he needs. Make sure the bed is washable in case of accidents.
Pomskies are not necessarily big dogs, but since they are a mix of the small breed Pomeranian and the large breed Siberian Husky, there is variation to the size of the dog. The breed as a whole tends to be medium-sized, ranging from 10 to 30 pounds and standing between 10 and 15 inches tall at the shoulder. It is not uncommon for some Pomskies to grow up to 40 pounds and sometimes be as tall as 22 inches. Ultimately, the size of the dog depends on the size of the Pomeranian and Husky parents.
Pomskies are typically very enthusiastic about swimming! They are loyal, intelligent, and active dogs with lots of energy, so they enjoy exercising and staying active to utilize some of that puppy energy. Swimming is a great way to do this and they seem to love the water and playing in the pool. Pomskies have a natural affinity for swimming, they have a somewhat natural ability, and can learn to swim with minimal training. Allowing them to swim in a supervised environment can be a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your pup and ensure they stay fit and healthy.
Pomskies are absolutely wonderful with children! Their playful demeanor and outgoing personalities make them great companions for kids of all ages. Pomskies are especially good with children because they are a hybrid of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, and both of these breeds are known for being extremely patient, loving, and gentle around younger companions. Due to their small size, you don't have to worry about them knocking over or otherwise hurting kids accidentally, and they are great playmates. Pomskies are intelligent and eager to please, making them great candidates for training.
The amount of minutes required to train a Pomsky each day depends on the breed, age, and other factors. Most experts recommend devoting between ten to fifteen minutes per day, split into two or three shorter sessions (i.e. five to ten minutes in the morning and the same or slightly less in the afternoon). This should be done on a daily basis for consistent results. Longer, 30-minute sessions can be implemented, but should be done no more than three or four times a week.
