Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer breed of domesticdog that is a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. It is a relatively new breed that has become popular in recent years due to its petite size and beautiful features that resemble that of a husky. This breed can have long or short coats, and usually ranges in size from 10-15 pounds. The average life expectancy of a Pomsky is 12-15 years, with common heath issues such as eye irritations, collapsing trachea, obesity and dental diseases.
Pomskies cannot be classified as being generally hypoallergenic, as they are not a pure breed and so a range of genetic traits and characteristics will be present from the two parent breeds. It is possible however that some individuals may have a low tendency towards triggering allergies, due to the genes they have inherited from their parents. Ultimately, the only way to know if a particular Pomsky will cause allergies is to try it out. If you have a history of allergies it is best to consult your doctor before making a decision.
Pomskies are, in general, considered to be healthy, active dogs. As such, their diet should be formulated with their size and activity level in mind. Depending on the individual dog's age, size and activity level, dietary probiotics, prebiotics, antioxidants and vitamins may be recommended. It is also important to ensure adequate intake of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates from quality ingredients. An annual check up with a vet should include nutritional assessment and dietary recommendations.
Before getting a Pomsky, it's important to have the proper supplies on-hand. Essential items may include: a sturdy, size-appropriate leash; food and water bowls; regular dog food for their dietary needs; grooming supplies such as a brush and nail clippers; a pet bed or cage; a collar with ID tags; toys, both for exercise and for mental stimulation; puppy-proofing items like gates and covers for electrical outlets; disposable waste bags or a litter box; and lastly, some pet-safe cleaning products.
Pomskies, also known as Pomeranian-Husky mixes, can come in a range of sizes due to their parent breeds. Generally, Pomskies range from small to medium-sized, with an average adult weight between 10-35 pounds. Though some can reach sizes closer to a medium-sized dog. The exact size of your Pomsky may vary depending on its parents, as some mixes will produce smaller offspring and some will produce larger ones.
Pomskies need a significant amount of daily exercise and playtime, ideally around one hour. It is essential for them to receive enough physical and mental stimulation, in order to stay happy and stay in optimum physical condition. Taking them on regular walks or runs, as well as taking active play breaks in the yard, will help them burn off excess energy. Games like fetch and agility exercises, or even hide and seek can also be utilized. Preferably, a combination of these methods should be utilized, as this will keep your Pomsky mentally and physically entertained and active.
Pomskies can make excellent family dogs, thanks to their friendly and loyal nature. They are also quite small and full of energy, making them a perfect size to fit into most family households. Pomskies are intelligent, so they can learn tricks and commands quickly, and they will be eager to please their humans. As a hybrid between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, Pomskies tend to have excellent temperaments: affectionate towards their family, obedient when properly trained, and usually not aggressive or timid.
Training a Pomsky can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it definitely isn't easy. Like all puppies, Pomskies can be a handful and require consistent work and patience. Each pup is different and will require different levels of training to reach their highest potential. As with any kind of activity involving pets, positive reinforcement is the key. Showing patience and praising good behavior can go a long way in training. Additionally, having enough time throughout the day to train your pup is essential.
