Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an increasingly popular designer mixed breed dog created by crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Weighing up to 30 pounds, their loyal and friendly nature make them ideal companions for both children and adults. Many people also love their unique, fox-like appearance, which can vary greatly depending on the parent breeds. In addition to being extremely adorable, there are some interesting, fun facts about Pomskies. For instance, they have a thick, double layered coat that sheds twice a year to help shield them from temperatures from both hot and cold climates.
When considering whether a Pomsky may cause you to have allergies, it's important to note that many people are allergic to pet dander, or the tiny bits of dead skin shed by many animals, which can include dogs. Unfortunately, Pomskies will also shed their fur and, in turn, could trigger allergies. It's best to talk to your doctor about your specific allergies and any concerns you may have regarding having a Pomsky.
Pomskies typically consume a high-quality diet. This diet, as with all animals, should consist of both high-quality sources of protein and carbohydrates as well as vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Foods that are especially beneficial include lean meats, fish, poultry, egg whites, low-fat dairy, and beans. Additionally, a combination of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes, provide essential vitamins and minerals, and serve as healthy snacks. Although kibble is an acceptable choice, wet food should be included for optimal nutrition.
Prior to welcoming a new Pomsky into your home, it is important to do some preparation to ensure your pup's successful and happy transition. To begin, it's important to have the basics: food, dishes, toys, a bed or crate, collar and leash, a dog brush, and a coat and sweaters appropriate for the weather. Additionally, it's important to schedule a vet appointment in advance to make sure your pup is healthy and up to date on vaccines.
Pomskies vary in their size, ranging from small to large. Depending on the size of both of the dog breeds which make up the Pomsky, they may be considered to be a larger dog. Generally, their height can range anywhere from 10-15 inches and can weigh anywhere from 20-30 pounds. Pomskies are larger than some toy breeds but still smaller than powerhouse breeds like the German Shepherd or husky. Ultimately, it really depends on the individual dog and depends on the characteristics of the two breeds which make up the Pomsky.
Pomskies can be great swimmers! While some may be more hesitant or unable to swim due to physical limitations, most Pomskies have a natural affinity for the water. Even if your pup isn't naturally inclined to swim, you can often teach them how to enjoy it. Swimming is a great way to make sure they stay active and has many physical and mental health benefits. It is important to remember not to force them to swim and start off by teaching your Pomsky to be comfortable in the water through calming activities such as wading or standing in water.
It is important to note that it depends on the individual Pomsky and the other pet. Generally speaking, Pomskies are friendly and social animals, so it is likely that they will get along with other animals in the household. It is best to introduce and socialize them properly at an early age with other animals, and do so under the supervision of an experienced pet parent or veterinarian. Proper socialization can help ensure that two pets are properly introduced and tensions do not arise. Be sure to provide plenty of space and designate spaces for each pet.
Training Pomskies is a unique challenge that varies from dog to dog. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to train your pup for at least 10 minutes per day, but ideally around 30-60 minutes per day. Intensive training is best done in shorter 10-15 minute sessions a few times a day. Providing mental and physical stimulation to keep your Pomsky engaged is also important to keep their minds active and healthy. Keeping up with regular training and exercise sessions each day is the best way to ensure your pup stays focused and learns the proper commands.
