Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer dog breed, which is the result of crossing two purebred dogs the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. As with any other hybrid, the exact characteristics of a Pomsky can vary, but they typically stay small, and are known for their fluffy coats and friendly temperaments. Generally, these dogs have a wolf-like appearance, with thick coats and pointed ears. In terms of temperament, Pomskies tend to make good family pets, as they are loyal, charming and fairly devoted to their owners.
It is possible that Pomskies may cause an allergic response, like any other breed. However, many people find that they are actually hypoallergenic and may not cause allergic reactions in people that are otherwise allergic to other breeds. As with any breed, the best way to determine whether Pomskies may trigger an allergic reaction in an individual is to carefully observe the reaction of the Pomsky and interact with it to see if any allergic symptoms can be observed, such as sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose, redness of the skin, or itching.
Pomskies require a balanced diet that includes all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need to stay active and happy. The most important nutrient for a Pomsky is protein, which can be found in sources such as high-quality dog food, fresh cuts of meat, eggs and fish. Additionally, it's important to supplement their diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables, primarily dark green, leafy vegetables, and omega-6 fatty acids, which are important for skin and coat health. Studies suggest that Pomskies may also benefit from raw diets with occasional cooked meals and treats.
It's important to ensure your home is properly set up for your new Pomsky before they arrive. Make sure the area they are going to sleep in is in a quiet area of the home, provide them with a comfortable crate or bed, and remove any items that could pose a hazard to them. To get them used to your home, introduce them to the sights and smells around them such as furniture and other pets. Try to keep their environment as organized as possible so they have easy access to their food, water, and toys.
Pomskies come in many sizes, ranging from 'toy' (between 6-9 lbs) to 'small' (10-15 lbs). Depending on the litter, dogs in the same size range can range in weight up to two or three pounds heavier. The smallest size range will typically feature short legs, ears, and faces with a 'cute' look, while larger sizes will appear much more like a regular-sized Husky, with fox-like features. Pomskies always have one thing in common regardless of size, which is a fluffy coat that requires maintenance.
On average, Pomskies should get at least 30 minutes of daily exercise; however, if they have sufficient access to a yard or other outdoor area to play, then the number of minutes can be reduced. If you do choose to give your Pomsky a daily walk, it is recommended that it’s no less than 20 minutes and no more than 60 minutes. It should also be split into two separate walks, each preferably in the morning and evening, to ensure your Pomsky’s health and well-being.
Pomskies can be a great family dog if carefully and thoughtfully considered. These clever little dogs are known to be intelligent, independent, and loyal, with a combination of the Siberian Husky's mellow and outgoing personality with the Pomeranian's playfulness and alertness. While Pomskies may require more physical and mental stimulation than other breeds, in the right environment they can make an excellent companion for any family that is willing to meet their needs for frequent exercise, mental stimulation, and training.
Pomskies are often considered to be quite intelligent and clever dogs. They can be trainable and have a natural curiosity that can help them learn a variety of behaviors quickly. Many Pomskies have a knack for obedience and are eager to please their owners, which makes them great candidates for almost any style of training. They often also display a penchant for problem-solving, and some owners even report that their Pomskies are quite devious about working around certain commands.
