Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a type of designer-dog, also known as hybrid dogs. Their parent breeds are the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, both of which are members of the spitz family, which are distinguished by their thick, long fur, pointed ears, and thick-set, furry tails. The Pomsky hybrid is known for being small, yet sturdy; they have fluffy coats and often sport unique markings, such as a mask-like pattern around the eyes, similar to the Husky parent.
It is true that Pomskies generally have less shedding compared to other breeds, but they do shed to some extent. Brushing at least once a week is recommended in order to reduce the amount of hair that ends up in your house. Regular vet visits and appropriate grooming will also help reduce shedding. While there is no guarantee that a Pomsky will be totally non-shedding, their coats are much easier to maintain and they produce far less pet hair than some other breeds. Additionally, the length of their coat tends to reduce the amount of visible shedding.
Pomskies are a mixed breed of dogs, created from Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies, and therefore have a digestive system that can be sensitive to certain foods. As with any pet, it's important to be aware of foods that can be harmful for them. Too much of certain foods can lead to obesity, as well as cause digestive issues and be potentially toxic. Foods that should not be fed to your Pomskie include: chocolate, alcohol, grapes and raisins, coffee, avocado, onions, garlic, various nuts, and raw bread dough.
Pomskies may have a few specific needs that you'll need to consider before adding one to your family. They're a relatively new breed, so their personalities may vary widely, and you'll need to tailor your approach to their individual characteristics. They're usually quite active and enjoy having plenty of exercise, so having a fenced in yard or walking them on a leash can help provide them with adequate exercise. They may also require socialization with other dogs and humans, as they can be timid or even aggressive without proper exposure.
Pomskies are considered small dogs according to the breed standards used by the American Kennel Club. A typical Pomsky is expected to be between 10 and 15 inches tall when fully grown, and weigh 10 to 30 pounds, making them a medium-sized designer dog. These smaller frame sizes have been bred over generations to produce a dog that is approriate for small living areas while still keeping the Husky’s trademark majestic look that many people adore. Pomskies have many health advantages due to their size.
The amount of time you should walk your Pomsky each day depends on a variety of factors such as its age, size, and activity level. Generally speaking, it's good to aim for at least 30 minutes of walking time each day. Taking your Pomsky on two 15-minute walks, one in the morning and one in the evening, can provide enough exercise for its needs. Additionally, you should also break up the walks with plenty of playtime. If your Pomsky is particularly active, it may need more time.
Pomskies can make wonderful family pets as they generally thrive with children and enjoy spending time with them. They are often seen playing games, being cuddled, and lots of love shared with kids. Pomskies are loyal, gentle, and affectionate, often claiming children as their own special people they protect and provide loyalty towards. They do well with positive reinforcement, gentle handling, and a good long walk for exercise. Furthermore, these energetic, smart dogs are social and do best when they get along with children and other animals.
Training a Pomsky is not necessarily easy, but it can be achievable with patience, consistency, and using positive reinforcement-based methods. All Pomskies, like any other dog, will need some sort of obedience training. As an intelligent breed, they will learn quickly, making training an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your Pomsky. However, it is important to understand that Pomskies are very social and independent, meaning that establishing a strong bond through proper training is essential.
