Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a relatively new designer dog breed which are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are often referred to as "Ewoks" because of their small size and thick coat of fur which makes them look like a walking teddy bear! Pomskies are usually fairly friendly, smart, and loyal dogs. They are not known for being overly vocal, as their husky lineage tends to keep their barking at a minimum. What's more, they usually have great endurance which makes them great exercise or hiking companions.
Pomskies are usually considered to have low to moderate dander and consequently low allergen levels. However, no breed of dog can definitively be specified as hypoallergenic. Furthermore, the level of allergens produced by a given individual will vary depending on a range of environmental and genetic factors. Therefore, it is impossible to confirm that a Pomsky is entirely hypoallergenic, as every dog carries a unique and individual level of allergens.
Pomskies have individual needs when it comes to nutrition and selecting the right food for them can be challenging. However, the best choice is usually a high-quality, nutritionally balanced, commercial brand of dog food tailored to the breed. These brands normally contain at least 18% of protein, 5–7% of fat and are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals to ensure that the pup gets the right nutrients at the right levels. It is also important to look at the ingredients list of any food you feed your Pomsky to make sure it contains whole, real foods.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky requires dedication to their growth and development. You can start by researching the breed, being prepared for the financial and emotional demands of pet ownership, and surround yourself with resources and people who may be able to offer help. Training and socialization are key in developing a well-rounded pup. Make sure to take time every day to bond with your pup by providing opportunities for exercise and obedience-focused activities. Take advantage of doggy daycare or dog walking services in order to provide socialization and learning opportunities while you are away.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes, ranging from toy Pomskies, which are relatively small and can weigh between four and 8 pounds, to standard Pomskies, which usually weigh between 15 and 35 pounds. However, even within a given size category, individual Pomskies can vary in size, depending on their parents' genes. For instance, a toy Pomsky sourced from a smaller Pomeranian and a larger Siberian Husky sire could weigh more than a toy Pomsky sourced from a pair of smaller parents.
The amount of walking time you should dedicate to your Pomsky each day significantly depends upon its age, energy level, and overall health. Generally speaking, you should allow for at least 30 minutes of walking for a healthy adult Pomsky. If your Pomsky is a puppy, and still growing, you should stagger their walking time so it totals at least 15 minutes per day. Of course, depending on the breed and individual activity level of your pup, you may need to add more time to these general guidelines.
Pomskies can most certainly get along with other pets if given the right introduction and sufficient socialization. A Pomsky can, however, be quite territorial so it is important to make sure that they are monitored around other animals or small children. All animals should be introduced slowly, under controlled conditions, and given the space and time to get to know one another. Allowing a Pomsky to interact with other animals in such a gradual, positive manner can lead to a pleasant and harmonious relationship with other pets in the home.
Pomskies can be considered smart dogs. While they are fundamentally a hybrid breed, some individual dogs possess heightened intelligence due to their parent breeds. They are often eager to learn, clever in grasping commands or tricks, and display sharp awareness of their surroundings. Additionally, Pomskies are known to be emotionally sensitive, naturally adaptable, and often display great loyalty towards their owners. All these traits are defining characteristics of an intelligent pup. Additionally, with dedicated trainig and proper socialization, a Pomsky can become even more perceptive and responsive.
