Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, or designer, breed of canines developed by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. Adorably small yet strong, these energetic dogs weigh from 12 to 20 pounds and stand between 8 to 17 inches tall. Described as having an outgoing, adventurous spirit and a bold personality, Pomskies possess a sturdy, compact build and fluffy coats. They are smart and can learn quickly, but gentle training is recommended in order to properly control their often mischievous nature.
Pomskies are not considered "non-shedding," as they belong to a hybrid breed between two already moderate-to-heavy shedding breeds. They certainly shed less than their canine counterparts, but you can still expect to groom your Pomsky regularly to keep their coat healthy and away from excess shedding. If you can provide ample grooming sessions and regular brushing, it can produce a thick and fluffy coat that doesn't shed as much as breeds prone to excessive shedding. Ultimately, Pomskies are not likely to be an ideal choice if you are after a non-shedding dog.
Feeding your Pomsky a well-rounded, nutritious diet is key for their health and well-being. It is recommended to feed a diet consisting of high-quality, grain-free kibble and wet food specifically formulated for small breeds. It is also beneficial to supplement their diet with freeze-dried or raw foods for additional nutrition and variety. Make sure to provide your pup with access to fresh, clean water throughout the day. As treats, you can feed various fruits, vegetables, and meats, such as cooked eggs, yogurt, cooked fish, kale, apples, and bananas.
Preparing for your new Pomsky involves more than just stocking up on food and supplies; it also requires researching and learning about their behavior and needs, as well as a commitment to providing your pup with a safe, caring and loving environment. Begin by researching how to select the best Pomsky, feed them an appropriate diet based on age and activity level, and provide them with plenty of exercise and socialization. Make sure you have the necessary supplies, such as a crate, bed, toys and grooming materials.
Every Pomsky puppy is unique and their size may vary depending on their parent breeds. Generally speaking, Pomskies grow to be somewhere between 10-15 inches tall and can weigh 15-30 pounds. That said, your Pomsky's size will ultimately depend on whether they take after the Pomeranian parent breed or the Siberian Husky parent breed. Typically, puppies who have a Pomeranian parent are much smaller in size than those with a Siberian Husky parent. It's also important to keep in mind that Pomsky puppies may take up to two years to reach their full size.
The amount of walking your Pomsky should do in a day is dependent on many factors. It is best to consult your veterinarian for advice specific to your unique pet before considering a daily walking routine. Generally, most animals of this breed need around 30 minutes of moderate activity per day, which could be achieved with a short walk or light play. However, if your Pomsky is still a puppy, their activities should be closely monitored to ensure their bones and joints are not overstressed.
Pomskies can make good family dogs in the right home. They are an intelligent and active breed that requires an owner that is willing to dedicate time to training and exercise. Their small size and moderate energy levels make them an excellent companion for households with older children. Pomskies can be quite affectionate and loyal to their owners and make an ideal pet and companion in the home. As with any breed, it is important to provide socialization and obedience training to help ensure they remain well-mannered and obedient.
It is difficult to provide an exact number of minutes per day that you should train a Pomsky, as this amount will vary depending on your dog's individual needs and goals. Generally speaking, it is recommended to start with several 10 to 15 minute sessions every day, working on basic commands and obedience. If your pup is already familiar with these behaviours, then several 20 to 25 minute sessions focussing on more advanced training are encouraged. Breaking the sessions up into smaller chunks will also help to keep your pup focused and engaged.
