Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an incredibly fascinating breed of dog that stands out for their fluffy coated appearance and engaging personalities. Born from a hybrid mix of the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian, Pomskies can vary in size but tend to remain on the smaller end of the spectrum. While they possess the Husky's love of playing outside, they also benefit from the Pomeranian's innate intelligence. As a result, Pomskies have become renowned for their trainability, making them excellent family pets.
The Pomsky's coat is wonderfully unique, with some dogs exhibiting more of a blend of the coat of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky while others may show more of one or the other. Generally, the Pomsky coat will be shorter, softer, and fluffier than either parent's coat. The undercoat of the Pomsky will be thick and dense, and their outer coat will generally have a rugged texture. It is usually straight to wavy, but there can be a slight curl under the thick undercoat.
Pomskies are omnivorous, so they should not be fed human food that is unhealthy and high in fat, salt, sugar, and calories such as sugary snacks, fries, cakes, and ice cream. Pomskies also require a diet that is low in proteins and high in carbohydrates. Therefore foods like raw meat, fish, pork, and eggs should also not be given to them.
To be the best puppy parent for your Pomsky, you need to provide them with love, affection, discipline and structure. Start by creating a daily routine for your pup and stick to it. Make sure you are providing them with plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and one-on-one bonding time. Proper nutrition is key; ask your veterinarian what type of food they recommend and stay away from the unhealthy options. Set rules and boundaries for your puppy and be consistent with the rules. Be sure to display positive reinforcement when they do something right.
Though size may vary depending on the particular Pomsky, on average they tend to be a small breed. Generally, their adult weight can range anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds depending on their particular lineage, and they usually reach no more than 15 inches in height. Pomskies tend to have a thick, double layer coat which gives the appearance of a larger size, but the breed is definitely closer to that of a toy breed. They also tend to have a moderate energy level making them an ideal fit for many types of homes.
Absolutely! Pomskies are very active and energetic dogs, making them ideal for those looking for a companion to participate in activities such as hiking, running, agility courses, or fetch. They have a high energy level and enthusiasm that is undeniable, and they require plenty of physical activity with plenty of opportunity to run and jump. This breed is also incredibly smart and loves to solve puzzles and learn new tricks, making them great participants in obedience and agility classes. With the right amount of exercise and stimulation, Pomskies can make the perfect companion for an active and adventurous lifestyle.
Pomskies can typically get along well with other pets if properly socialized. As with all breeds, early socialization and training is important to ensure that your Pomskies grow up to be friendly and confident around other animals. Introduce them to different experiences and environments gradually to allow them to get comfortable and learn how to interact appropriately with other pets. It's also important to supervise all interaction between pets and encourage behaviors that promote positive relationships between them. With patience and plenty of positive reinforcement, your Pomskies should be able to peacefully coexist with other animals in your house.
The amount of time you will need to spend training your Pomsky each day will depend largely on their age, physical and mental health, and individual energy levels. Keeping them active and stimulated is key to having a successful relationship with your pup. Generally, at least 25 minutes per day of activity will be necessary to keep your Pomsky healthy and happy. This can include out walks, in-home agility drills, or off-leash romps in a safe, enclosed environment.
