Questions & Answers
Pomskies are incredibly interesting dogs because of their unique blend of two distinctive dog breeds. They tend to take after their Pomeranian parent when it comes to size and intelligence, while their Siberian Husky parent contributes to their larger, more wolf-like appearance. Not only do they make a great companion, they're also a highly sought-after designer dog breed around the world. Their individual personalities can vary widely, but they are generally friendly and loyal.
Pomskies are a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, and should have the double-coat of a Husky. While these hybrid dogs are much less likely to shed than a Husky, they still have a tendency to shed some. Since Pomskies are bred to have a shorter, thicker coat than a Husky, they may have fewer shedding issues. The amount of shedding will depend on the individual Pomsky's genetics, so it is not possible to guarantee that a Pomsky pup will be entirely non-shedding.
Pomskies should not be fed large amounts of food, as well as anything high in sugar, salt, fat, and preservatives. Foods and treats that are especially off-limits for Pomskies include rawhide, grapes, raisins, avocados, chocolate, macadamia nuts, garlic, onions, and dairy products. Avoid feeding a Pomsky any human food, as most human food is too high in calories and fat for them. Feed your Pomsky a high-quality dog food made with real meat and vegetables.
Before you get a Pomsky, there are several essential items you should consider purchasing. Most importantly, you'll need a good quality pet crate or kennel to keep your pup secure and comfortable when you're away. You'll also need food and water bowls, a collar and leash, toys and treats, a bed for them to sleep on, and items for grooming such as dog shampoo, a slicker brush, and a nail clipper. If you plan on taking them on walks, you might want to invest in a runner or jogger leash to keep them safe.
Pomskies are classified as small dogs, often weighing between 10 and 20 pounds. Depending on the exact parent breeds of the Pomsky, however, their size can vary greatly. Many Pomskies are considerably smaller than 20 pounds, and it is not unusual for Pomskies to remain relatively small despite extensive growing periods. Additionally, Pomskies often inherit the small features of both parent breeds, such as compact bodies, short legs, and small ears.
It is recommended to walk your Pomsky for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes per day. This should be a leisurely stroll designed to exercise the body and stimulate the mind. Sporadic bursts of activity for a total of 30 to 45 minutes can also be beneficial for your Pomsky. Exercise should be based on the age, activity level, and health of your individual Pomsky. Always give your Pomsky enough rope to wander and explore during your walks, as this stimulates your dog's curiosity and allows them to get the exercise they need for mental stimulation.
Pomskies, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, are friendly, loving, and loyal companions that make for ideal pets. They have a gentle and playful nature that can make them great around kids. As with any dog, supervision is always recommended when kids are interacting with a Pomsky to help ensure that things stay positive. Proper socialization and training from a young age can also help a Pomsky adjust to its surroundings and ensure a good relationship with kids.
Training a Pomsky is no different than training any other dog. Even though Pomskies can be considered high-energy family pets, they are also incredibly intelligent and capable of learning quickly. Depending on your training approach, training a Pomsky could be relatively easy. Utilizing positive reinforcement techniques and lots of patience, Pomsky owners can quickly teach basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. To make the training process a success, consistency is essential. If you remain consistent with commands and the rules you set for your pup, they will learn more quickly and efficiently.
