Questions & Answers
Pomskies are considered to be a designer dog breed, meaning that they are developed by crossing two different purebreds together to produce offspring with desirable traits. They are a hybrid cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, and can generally look like a smaller husky or a larger Pomeranian, depending on the ratio of the two parent breeds. Pomskies tend to be highly intelligent, active, and thrive in wide open spaces. They often have moderately thick double layers of fur, with the undercoat a bit softer than the topcoat.
Pomskies can be a relatively low-shedding breed of dog but their individual shedding tendencies depend largely on which parent characteristics they inherit. Pomskies that are predominantly Pomeranian may shed less due to the Pomeranian's thick, double coat while those that are more Siberian Husky may shed a bit more due to the Husky's thick, dense top coat. It's also important to keep in mind that even the lowest shedding varieties of dog will still shed at least some hair.
Pomskies typically enjoy a high-quality diet of dry food or mash. These meals should include proteins, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals. Be sure to only feed your Pomsky specific food that is suitable for their age, as puppies require significantly different diets than adult dogs. Along with food, you may want to include some supplements like omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics. If you are unsure of what to feed your Pomsky, consult a veterinarian before making any changes to their diet. While occasional treats are okay, try to limit them to prevent health problems from developing.
Before getting a Pomsky, it's essential that you have all the supplies you need. You'll need a bed, bowls, leash, collar and food for starters. It's advisable to also get a brush, nail clippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner for grooming. A few toys may also help make a new bonding experience with your pup smooth. A cage or playpen may be necessary to help you keep your pup safe when you can't be right there with them.
Pomskies are usually considered medium-sized dogs. Most specimens of this designer breed are between 10 and 25 pounds, and typically between 10 and 16 inches tall. Therefore, as the breed does not usually classify as large or giant, Pomskies would not be considered big dogs. They are a great companion for those who enjoy the company of a playful and lively dog, while requiring the smaller amount of space needed for a pet their size.
Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed and as such, their exercise needs vary, depending on their individual traits. Generally, however, they need a good amount of physical and mental daily exercise in order to remain healthy and happy. This could be anything from a long walk, jog, or run to playing fetch or taking part in canine agility training. Exercise should be tailored to the Pomsky's size, age and health condition, though a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day should be the goal.
Pomskies usually do get along with other pets, such as cats and dogs, as they are warm and friendly, despite their territorial nature. These breeds are easy to socialize with other animals, and if given the right environment, can form relationships with other pets. It's important to make sure that the introduction of a new pet is done slowly and under supervision, as Pomskies possess a high prey drive. Training sessions should also be conducted regularly to ensure that proper behavior is maintained among all the animals.
Training a Pomsky can vary in difficulty depending on the individual pup, but with the correct approach, such as providing firm yet positive guidance, consistency and plenty of rewards, it can be achieved. The key is to start early and reinforce good behaviors while ignoring bad ones. Building that special bond between pup and owner and having patience are essential when it comes to forming the foundation for a well-trained Pomsky. Make sure there is enough time dedicated to training and be sure to keep playtime fun but ensure that it follows specific rules that the pup follows and understands.
