Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, designer dog breed composed of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. There is no single, accepted classification of this breed; however, the United Kennel Club recognizes Pomskies as a member of its Working Group and the American Canine Hybrid Club classifies them as a Hybrid or Mixed breed. As a hybrid breed, the exact size, appearance, and temperament of a Pomsky can vary, depending on which breed traits are inherited from the parent Pomeranian or Siberian Husky.
Pomskies are not considered to be hypoallergenic. Many of the hybrid's components, such as the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, are heavy shedders and thus may not be suitable for people allergic to their fur. This is an important factor to consider for those looking to get a Pomsky. While there is no scientific evidence that indicates that Pomskies are hypoallergenic, there are several other ways that prospective owners can manage pet allergies.
Pomskies should not be fed any type of human food, such as chocolate, corn chips, or popcorn. They should also not have access to table scraps, rawhide, bones, or processed treats. Other items to avoid include macadamia nuts, moldy fruits and vegetables, yeast dough, alcohol, caffeine, avocado, grapes, raisins, and garlic. Never feed Pomskies anything that has been cooked, frozen, or smoked, as these items can be dangerous and potentially fatal. Additionally, always consult a veterinarian about your Pomky's individual dietary needs.
One of the best ways to prepare for your new Pomsky is to do some research about their breed and characteristics. Take the time to read up on their characteristics, size, activity levels, health requirements, diet, exercise and grooming needs. You should also set up the ideal environment for your pup by having everything they need before they arrive, including crates, beds, toys, and more. Additionally, you should research and attend obedience and puppy classes which will help you learn how to properly train your pup.
Pomskies can come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny TeaCup/Toy sizes, to a slightly larger Miniature size, and finally, the Standard size. Each size is more or less a direct result of the size of the dog breeds used to create these wonderful hybrid dogs. Toy Pomskies will be the smallest, measuring around 4-7 lbs, while the Miniature Pomskies will weigh slightly more at 8-15 lbs. Finally, the Standard Pomskies will be the largest, typically measuring between 10-20 lbs.
Absolutely! As long as you and your Pomsky are both up for it, taking your pup for a run is a great way to get exercise and burn off some of that excess energy. Just make sure to take safety precautions such as bringing enough water and a first-aid kit in case of any unforeseen circumstances. It's also important to factor in your Pomsky's age and size when deciding how far you'll go – too much running, jumping, and playing can put too much strain on their developing bones and muscles.
Pomskies can be great companions for kids! They generally have loving, loyal personalities and tend to enjoy the company of their family. A Pomsky's spirit is often gentle and social, with a better-than-average aptitude for learning. That being said, it's important to always supervise interactions between your Pomsky and your children, as with any breed of dog. Ensuring appropriate socialization and teachings of basic obedience is also key to ensure any interactions between a Pomsky and kids are pleasant and safe for everyone involved.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how many minutes per day you need to train your Pomskies, as the amount of time will vary depending on the individual needs and behavior of your particular dog. Generally speaking, most experts recommend 20 to 30 minutes per day of consistent, positive-based training. Beginners may opt to start at shorter, 10-minute intervals, and then add 5 to 10 minutes each week until your Pomsky is used to the regular routine and expectations of the training.
