Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid or designer breed, bred from a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They represent some of the best qualities of each parenting breed, combining the best of both worlds. They tend to be a small to medium sized dog, often displaying the thick fluffy coat of the Husky, yet a much smaller size. Its personality is known for its intelligence and playfulness, making Pomskies great companions.
The Pomsky is a hybrid of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, and as such, its coat can vary depending on the exact mix of the two parent breeds. Although the length of the fur tends to be short, its texture can range from soft and fluffy to dense and wiry, usually with a glossy sheen. The coloring of their coats can also vary, but they tend to be darker than that of the Pomeranian parent -usually in a range of browns and grays.
Pomskies, particularly mini Pomskies, are best suited for a diet consisting of premium, grain-free, high-protein dog food that is specifically designed for small breed adult dogs. If you are not able to access premium dog food, you may be able to feed your pup a combination of nutrient-rich, low-fat wet food and dry dog food that contain healthy sources of fat, such as salmon or safflower oil. However, check the label to ensure that the food contains all the essential vitamins and minerals that your Pomsky needs.
To prepare your home for your new Pomsky, make sure your living space is thoroughly cleaned and pet-friendly. Establish a routine and known areas for play, sleeping, eating, and potty training. Invest in some basic supplies, such as food and water dishes, chew toys, a bed or cozy crate, and perhaps a few treats. Make sure your floors and furniture are protected from any accidents by having pet-friendly flooring and covers. Finally, create a safe environment by closing off any hazardous areas for the puppy, such as stairs, exits, or areas with sharp objects.
Pomskies typically get to around 15–20 pounds as adults. They are considered a toy breed, so their size is usually on the smaller side, but due to breed variations, there are some heavier individuals. Generally, they reach their adult weight at around 10-14 months old. In terms of height, they are typically between 10-15 inches tall at the shoulder. Fully grown, they make great indoor and outdoor companions for many different types of households.
Absolutely! Pomskies are highly active dogs who love to be busy and require plenty of mental and physical stimulation throughout the day. They are considered medium-energy dogs, but their enthusiasm and eagerness to please can make them appear to be more high-energy than they are. On average, they need around an hour of exercise each day, split into two or more sessions. If left alone with inadequate activity, Pomskies can become destructive, bored, and unhappy. The most important part of being a successful Pomsky owner is making sure that his physical and mental needs are met.
Pomskies generally get along quite well with kids! Being a hybrid of two friendly breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, Pomskies tend to have friendly, outgoing personalities that make them fantastic companions for children. They are usually playful, interactive, and eager to please, which makes them fun and entertaining for kids. They enjoy spending time with people and thrive when they are around children, making them an excellent choice if you have kids.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Pomskies will vary depending on the individual pup, since all dogs are different and have varying levels of intelligence and different temperaments. Generally speaking, Pomskies can benefit from at least 10-15 minutes of training per day; however, it is recommended to provide short, fun, and engaging training sessions throughout the day. If you are introducing new behaviors to improve obedience, you may need to dedicate more time, up to 20-30 minutes a day.
